The secret level boss is unfortunately as quick, and more dangerous.
Though I can comfortably beat both bosses now (after having an almost panic attack on my first try with the stage 8 boss)

the remarkable thing about the Phantom Crash OST is that the song list in the overseas version is incredibly cut down from the Japanese original and even them trying to bring back a lot of stuff in SLAI doesn’t cover a chunk of the cuts
also don’t play SLAI. unless you like watching your health bar evaporate because the arena ranker snuck up behind you. odds are people playing it today would emulate it and think it’s an emulation bug and, no, I’m here to tell you that you dying that fast is 110% real hardware accurate
To this day I mix those two games up (and mostly forget that Phantom Crash even exists)
The polls have started. Make sure to vote! Also! Make sure to change the setting of the thread to “Watching” that way you won’t miss them when they get buried. Last I checked, Cosmology of Kyoto and Echo Night Beyond were at a standstill. Maybe that will change, maybe it won’t! Vote and find out!
oh this reminded me
if you want to be a real sicko go into your tracking preferences and select every category possible
as soon as you do this you will be tracking every thread on the website you haven’t ever heard of. it will open a new world of possibilities and things to read forever
the difference between watching and tracking is watchjng will notify you every time there is a post and tracking will keep count of unread posts but not send you a notification in your little menu
The Message From Deep Space: just want to put my hat in the ring and say that even though I’m only in the 200s (out of what was it, 900 something?) and that’s apparently taken me 8 hours, I do not feel that this is slow or boring in any way. Occasionally I am a little like, ok ok, I get it, but only occasionally - very frequently even if the answer is obvious the transmission is adding more information, and anyway the diegetic explanation always makes sense - the aliens are trying to be as robust and precise as possible, to ensure understanding.
But mostly, I am electrified. The end of Act III just about blew what’s left of my hair off my head. Legitimate goosebumps.
Splatoon Raiders: After bashing my head against floors 97-99 of the endless dungeon for days I have finally beaten floor 100 and am done. I must have picked the worst build because even at level 110+ floor 99 seemed practically impossible until I happened to get lucky.
Anyway this and Raindrop Sprinters were the two blood-pressure-raising games I’ve been on the cusp of completing for a while and struggling, and now I have beaten them both on the same day so that’s like a big pressure valve being released.
Also finished Raidou Remastered in the last week. Was surprisingly short and easy for an SMT game. Which was just fine for me. Gouto was cool.
My new game I have just started recently is Fantasy Maiden Wars. Yes… I am playing a Touhou fan game, have mercy upon my soul. It seems pretty decent as an SRPG though. I’ve never played anything from this franchise, I didn’t realise it had such wacky lore like a girl who can eat history etc. Apparently it’s pretty long so we’ll see if I get too moé-ed out before the end
can you believe that it is possible to play Bloodborne emulated on PC these days? with potentially better performance than on console? incredible times. anyway i’m playing bloodborne for the first time at last! it’s excellent so far! i didn’t realise it was an isekai!
Someday I will stop Assassin’s Creed posting…once I finally beat this one. And until I decide to go back to Valhalla (unlikely but who knows).
The DLC…is pretty good. The area it occupies isn’t super huge (I mean, it kinda is, compared to any other game, but for this one? Fair), but it’s pretty dense for what there is.
I think most importantly is that this DLC fucks with you and your expectations pretty much out of the gate. You get hints of it near the start - the sudden appearance of tripwires across your usual sneaking approaches, random villagers suddenly throwing a knife at you as you pass and trying to kill you, the cool looking but disquieting rustling of leaves preceding three or four shinobi leaping from the tall grass to attack.
Anyway, all these things (plus some big ass roadblocks/checkpoints) are tied to various targets in the DLC, and really force you to play it very carefully moving around. I killed the spy master, so now I’m no longer attacked by random citizens in disguise. I’ve taken out some military captains, so roadblocks are gradually ebbing away.
I bring all this up because I’m stuck in what has to be the best boss fight in the series (mechanically, at least - it’s hard to top bare knuckle boxing the Pope). I’m basically in a trap laden swamp filled with enemy decoys, trying to find a sniper who you have to pinpoint by her voice and laughter. It’s a lot of carefully disarming traps, staying out of sight, and trying to get closer and closer to the voice, right up until you come up on one or two decoys in question. Get it wrong, you get a face full of poison and shot in the head. Doesn’t go great!
Anyway, it’s a cool fight. It’s also super frustrating.
It’s also maybe nothing MGS3 didn’t already do with The End, but hey, copy from the best, right?
I had a similar experience with those floors. I think it was because I chose tactical tank and spent my crystals upgrading a Splattershot instead of gadgets. I’m getting over humps past 100 now by upgrading gadget parts – they just increase damage by some percentage – but when I join other raids people are outclassing me by using freeze and flight powers with the speed tank as well as weapons that hit multiple targets like blasters and chargers.
It took me a few tries to beat the end boss, the Elden Fish. Ended up equipping the speed gadget that gives you a couple dodges with i-frames.
I’ll probably keep going until I find all the relics at least.
Yeah I was stubbornly sticking to my setup of Titanium Twincans, the speed tank with the boot, grapple thing and booyarangs, and Big Man. I had freeze on the boot and 5x damage to freeze on my weapon, but that probably doesn’t do as much on a dualie. But mostly I was just jumping around like mad trying to focus fire on one enemy at a time, and often found I wasn’t even able to get enough eggs to trigger the showstopper on floor 97. The rapid fire guns are the only weapons that feel good to me, the others are way too slow.
It kinda worked out on the big boss though, since I was able to cover a lot of ground quickly and get behind him most of the time. So it only took about 3 tries.
speaking as someone who happened onto doing the big freeze one-shots organically with my own stupid brain, any weapon is rapid fire if you mash ![]()
the problem with the freeze breaker trait on anything not a charger or bow is that it only lasts for one hit, so you would need a consistent source of freeze, which means you need that trait on a weapon and also have RNG on your side. you might be better off running burning and that other trait that makes it spread if you don’t care about going deep deep
I can tell you, I hit like… floor 400? game’s still the same.
A post was merged into an existing topic: Gran Turismo 4, and the idiom ‘greater than the sum of its parts’
It’s so cool how like 70% of Japanese adventure games just drop little factoids I learned in elementary school as if it’s totally new, mind blowing shit. When I was younger I would have mocked this but nowadays I’m like “That’s good, people need reminders, folks believe in all kinds of crazy shit nowadays, maybe 14 year old anime girls dropping knowledge is a good thing on the whole.”
The more you know.. The more you know…
I played this freeware game through in one sitting last night. The platforming focus reminds me a little of Psychonauts. Recommended.
I play the intellectual Japanese adventure games that do the same thing but would’ve def included “proprioception”
I wasn’t sure if they were going to lock it to the bundle for launch, but they made it available seperately, so it’s only $20 for Peace Walker Co-Op
The mere possibility of my spouse getting into Metal Gear got me to buy both MCs. Apparently it’s not cross play, though, so… let’s hope everyone I know gets it on PC.
It’s really cool that the first Wing Commander is exhilarating to play today as it was when I played it as a kid in 2003. Even as someone who’s played A Lot of games like this it’s so awesome that I can still get stressed as fuck defending a destroyer from three Kilrathi starfighters even at a primitive level. Escort missions…are good…I keep finding myself saying this lately.
The Tiger’s Claw rocks. I love how much effort they put in to centering you as the main character, though the more narrative storytelling really doesn’t kick in until the expansion packs. You chat with your wingmen at the bar and listen to the bartender recount horrific Kilrathi warcrimes. You can check the kill board to see who’s whacked the most kitties! When you save the game it’s in the barracks and each save slot becomes occupied by a sleeping wingman when you do!! TOTAL IMMERSION GAMING!!!
I really like the rotoscoped animation of everyone running to their fighters after the briefing. Denis Loubet made someone run on a treadmill for it.
Commiting Collector Gaming Sin by unsealing a boxed copy of Homeworld and sticking the disc into my computer and typing the CD key in like it’s 1999, erasing an immense amount of value in the process. It comes with a soundtrack CD and prima guide and a wonderful manual
Windows is being very grumpy trying to run this, the build and research menus have unplayable lag unless I set it to software rendering. I tried several fixes, going to try some more tomorrow.
ah well! when the music swells as the mother ship launches from the scaffold for the first time it is so beautiful. Currently filled with wonder as i fuck up the first mission
