I’m going to try the Spanish fan translation and see where that takes me.
This isn’t even all of them. Also bonus my Physical PS1 collection I will probably never ever touch again.
Perfect time to introduce your kid to the joy of Sega Saturn ![]()

Wondering if the Saturn homebrew community will evolve to optimizing performance in games. Sounds like there’s a lot of improvements that could be made to Touring Car. I’d love to see vanilla Daytona handling ported to Championship Edition.
sound is too muted to be audible, so i am contractually obliged to provide a link to the gem/bgm that is an evergreen banger track that’s synonymous to the Saturn for me:

I’m doing it! I’m playing the Saturn!
I realized that today is May Day and I must, at the very least, hook up the console. I had many games set aside, and I was oddly drawn to Mega Man 8.
It is the Saturn as playable anime. I love how your first powerup is a soccer ball. You’re on the beach and it just makes the game seem like a pleasant vacation. It’s not the most stimulating Mega Man, but it is one of the most competent 2D platformers on the console by default.
After beating one robot master, I figured it was time to play another anime starring robot-men. I popped in Saturn Bomberman. The opening animation is one of the most brilliant I’ve seen.
The whole experience is so luxurious, a magnum opus of Hudson Soft ingenuity. The music is scintillating and groovy. The stages are intricate dioramas. Again, I am on vacation. This time, it’s a theme park. There are spinning tea cups, rollercoasters, and pirate ship shooting galleries. I’m truly going to savor my time with this.
tbh, as an outsider who never owned one, the lure of the Saturn catalogue is exactly that, most games feel like vacation feeling condensed.
And after honestly reconsidering for a while, that also extends to the games I enjoyed on the Dreamcast, even if it extends far across what one would classify as hangoutitude type of games.
And this still manages to make me shell out $$$ today, and in case it is for free (Nikki Infinite e.g.) i have some reservations to commit to playing it, for whatever reason … this is becoming quickly a case for Dr. Freud ![]()
Now that I’m in the habit of backing up my saves, I’ve started Sakura Taisen. Like Saturn Bomberman it is both a playable anime and a successor to the PC Engine canon. It was a joint development between SEGA and Red. Red specialized in integrating animation and serial storytelling with video game structures. Here, their strengths are on full display.
The characters appear a bit shallow at the beginning, but I’m loving how choices are set on a timer. There’s a pleasant jingle whenever you say something that makes the ladies happy. There’s an austere Russian woman I caught reading Crime and Punishment in the middle of the night. I’d like to get to know her better.
I’ve made it to the final boss in Saturn Bomberman. Taking on bosses with no powerups is challenging but not impossible. I took on this towering robot with nothing but one bomb and a lot of guts. It made me feel very muscular.
I really wish I could hold onto a dinosaur buddy for more than two stages. The way that they can grow up over time really makes them special. One hit, and they’re gone…
The voice acting is perfect Saturday morning delivery. This is one big bowl of cereal.
This weekend, I rolled credits on Saturn Bomberman and got hooked into Sakura Taisen. Saturn Bomberman bookends the game with another exquisite animation. The Bombermen wave goodbye to the dinos as they return to their own time. Everybody is crying, including me. I took another attempt on the survival mode and got Novice rank. I just love what a complete package this game is. It is the platonic ideal of Bomberman.
Sakura Taisen’s characters and plot started to pull me in on Episode 3. I know see that the first two episodes are little more than tutorials, introducing me to the overall flow of the game. Now the episodes go deep into each character, and you can really start to chew on everyone’s perspectives.
I’m in chapter 4 which focuses on the child of the troupe. I was worried at the beginning, but they’re actually treating her plot fairly well. A lot of my interactions, I found myself struggling to communicate in a way that would treat her with respect without feeding into her fantasies of being an adult.
The tactics part of the game is also starting to show a trace of challenges to come. This part of the game has had the lowest stakes so far. Every unit can heal twice in a match and starts with a full bar for using a sepcial attack. The hardest part is simply trying to finish the round fast enough so I can continue the story. Well, this most recent match saw me lose two units for the first time. My pilots’ moods plummeted and I imagine part of my work in the next adventure segment will be to repair the relationships.
Hell yeah hell yeah hell yeah, Saturn Bomberman is such a treat. They really knew what they were doing and made such a beautiful game out of it. “The Symphony of the Night of Bombermans” even.
Good luck!!! Spoiler hint: if you raise the affection of any pilot, they become very powerful in the battle stage. If you max out Iris, she becomes absolutely broken. But that also means you’re lovers with a child…
I’ve started my attempts on Sōkyūgurentai. I’ve never tried to tackle an 8ing joint, so there’s a learning curve. Yeah it’s a Compile mutation, but it feels so much more threatening than Gun-Nac, et al. I am currently playing the lowest difficulty, spending 5 credits, and doing my best to avoid ranking up. As is custom for the shooters from this time, I lose my first life in stage 3 and hit a wall of constant death on stage 5.
i gotta play Wachenröder
