the Saturn is a system i love in retrospect and i was definitely one of the vultures who bought one from Electronics Boutique when they were going for like $80 (also during the time where they decided they would briefly be selling imports?).
the first games i bought for it were the SotN port and X-Men vs. Street Fighter. both are rad! screw the Saturn SotN haters!
overall i don’t think i made a mistake in getting a Playstation over a Saturn, but if i’d been an adult with an income, i’d have had both.
anyway, Saturn is the one retro console i’ve been playing a lot, lately. i’ve been debating buying a modded one off of eBay, too, just because i want to play more stuff and do not necessarily want to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars to do so.
I’m assuming you play imports/4MB games with an Action Replay? If you’re willing to perform the burned disc swap trick one last time, you can flash your AR so it can play burned discs, at the cost of losing the memory card and cheat functions.
yeah, i watched the video about it. i’ve never actually done the swap trick, and losing the action replay as a memory card isn’t ideal. but it’s probably the more-economical choice, yeah.
you can also get one of the pre-patched pseudo saturn carts on ebay (or one of the action replay ones if you wanted to do the swap trick yourself). you can get one for under $40 USD and you wouldn’t have to give up your existing save backup solution nor pay big $$ for an ODE
edit: if i didn’t get one of the Action Replays that was patched, would i need to do the cart-swap trick do get 4MB games to run? or do these pseudosaturn carts have that, too? only asking, because my Saturn’s cartridge slot is beat to shit from all the swapping i used to do before i had the Action Replay.
pseudo saturn kai carts work as everything except backup save ram. 1MB and 4MB are covered. you can even play KOF95 and Ultraman via hacks that patch in the data from their respective bespoke carts
it is an interesting oddity made by the team that went on to make the other oddity, Streetwise. it’s also super expensive and not really worth the price, but probably worth bootlegging!
been loading up the SD card with Saturn games to play now that I have an ODE. I have never spent any real time with the system or its games. here is what I’ve got. still some space left: tell me what I’m missing, tell me what I did wrong, tell me what I need. I’ve skipped Virtua Cop because I don’t have a lightgun at the moment
this is a strong start, i’d just go nuts and start playing some stuff
most of my notes are about exactly which version of the games to play. for example, the seganet version of sega rally adds analog control and fixes a few little issues. the japanese re-release of clockwork knight includes both 1 and 2 with bugfixes, etc etc
where’s decathlete? put decathlete on there
eta: mr. bones - maybe try the english version first but know that the jp version is ultimately superior
oh cool cool it seems like this busted ass Saturn won’t load even with the Satiator. just a black screen after the start up logo. great great cool cool. I replaced the battery. latest firmware. nothing. %$#%
Pen Pen ManMaru : what if the 3D sections of Sonic Jam were a whole game?
Psycho Taromaru is also like real good because it seems like a game that should be worth pennies and be ridiculously cool not the upper end of the marketx
I’d say put Albert Odyssey on there because what have you got to lose? Not saying you won’t dip early but it’s got that early 32 bit “we just souped up a 16 bit game” vibe that I find really charming, yrmv.
Not USA but the Sakura Taisen fan translation is really good and you can imagine a scenario where it actually came out here, was successful, and saved the Saturn.
