I guess that makes some sense. She’s got to be used to the occupational hazards by now.

My main thought (more clearly expressed) was that playing as an unfearing murder machine seems to run counter to other Metroidian design goals like, say, cthonic horror. I feel like whether or not a designer sees the player character as being capable of experiencing raw terror might affect how committed they are to the goal of instilling fear in the player themself. Maybe that’s the case, maybe it’s not. I dunno.

Regardless, I do want is a Metroid game that makes having an oppressive, unsettling, alien atmosphere it’s first priority.

I want something that makes me feel out of my depth. I want something that makes my spine tingle from the mortal danger lurking around the corner that I’m unprepared to face. I want something that makes me want to curl up in a ball, hide in a corner (in game and irl), and leave the game paused forever.

That is what Tourian in Metroid 1 was to me as a kid. That is what the SA-X does to me when playing Fusion. That is what Eris was like almost the entire time. That’s something that Prime 1 and AM2R managed to evoke when they used darkness. That was the saving grace of Zero Mission’s stealth segment.

And that’s something that Samus Returns, SM Redesign, and a load of other technically polished fan efforts never managed to make me feel.

Maybe those games are scary, but now I am the unfearing murder machine.

Welp, I paid full price for this game so finished it and in conclusion I think it fucking sucks. Like, a game hasn’t made me angry for a long time, but fuck this game.

Basically everything in diplo’s first post and more. They completely screwed up the final area. Absolutely no atmosphere and added some annoying maze crap (annoying maze crap seems to be something that added a lot of). This game has no sense of atmosphere, pacing, structure, or identity. It fucking sucks. Fuck this game.

that’s a bit meanspirited there. that is definitely significantly worse than calling someone a really big metroid ii fan that really wants a direct remake, as i did.

the zelda comparison doesn’t really work. zelda ii is a totally different type of game from the first in every conceivable way, but alttp builds directly on zelda 1. metroid ii is still similar enough to the first game that it appears to be a sequel, but super doesn’t build on metroid 1 at all and is about as different as metroid ii is.

it just depresses me to see people target an automatically 9/10 game (at the least) in a very vulnerable series just because it isn’t the metroid ii their heart desires. glam isn’t the only one doing this. i’ve been seeing this a lot, and i don’t get it at all. am2r is a good game, but it’s as different from metroid ii as sr is. that game is 100% as “soulless and confused” as sr here.

no matter how much you love metroid ii, you’ve got to be careful. i adore every pixel of smb3 and it upsets me that nintendo has largely forgotten all of those pixels going forward. that series is not endangered at all, but i would still never ever demand such a thing in such a way.

what are the key things that make Super Metroid different from the original Metroid in ways that LTTP isn’t different from the original Zelda?

I don’t think this is just a bad M2 remake, I also think it’s a bad Metroid game, and a mediocre game on its own.

people are attached to samus being a badass because, as a series of action games about being a slick bounty hunter that finds cool weapons and kicks alien butt, players become this person named samus aran who’s a badass. what you’re asking for is, well, alien, and i’m not sure that would be a metroid game anymore.

this does not look like alien. this looks like an action movie.

basically all of alttp’s play control, much of its character scale, and most of its mechanics are taken straight from the first game, then kicked up a notch. more weird items and weapons to collect, more interesting people to talk to, more dungeons with more zany traps and secrets. the framework is pretty much identical.

super changes pretty much everything, the framework isn’t really the same anymore. play control is totally different in every conceivable way, it’s like you’re not even playing the same series. in metroid 1, you find a few items (and an awful lot of missiles) that allow you to deal with specific situations; in super, you find a bunch of items that allow you to handle pretty much any given situation in a powerful new way. in metroid 1, the most fearsome of critters are not much bigger than you are; in super, many regular enemies are the size of midbosses or bosses, every other boss takes up like half the screen, and kraid is just excessive. super even has a sense of a clear path through the game (somewhat taken from metroid ii), which metroid 1 doesn’t have at all; even alttp becomes pretty free-form after you get the master sword and get into the second, larger part of the game.

you could port alttp back to zelda 1’s engine without a whole lot of trouble. you could not even begin to port super back to metroid 1’s engine without an insane amount of work, and it wouldn’t really be the same engine when you were done. going from metroid 1 to super metroid is like going from… hard corps to hard corps uprising, i guess? a few very basic concepts remain, and that’s really about it. it was so hard to think of even a workable comparison. this kind of thing is just so rare.
