SaGa SCARLET GRACE: AMBITIONS Kawazu Club- the first new SaGa game in over 10 years

Okay that escalated quickly.

Huh, I just got that part in my game as well. I think despite our differences, we might be at pretty similar points in the game.

Maybe? I think I actually might have hit a branch again. My next goal was to go to Azhuacan to meet the father and I was about to but then I decided to at least walk around some regions first to see if there was anyone I could recruit, and in one of the regions we caught sight of Sigfrei. Urpina and Mondo said they should investigate what he’s up before going to Azhuacan and now I can’t go to Azhuacan anymore. So maybe if I went straight there I wouldn’t be in this Sigfrei story path.

Also they talked like I was supposed to know who Sigfrei was but I couldn’t remember him at all. I can’t tell if he’s just that unmemorable or if I just forgot what was going on after not playing for a few weeks during Christmas break.

Yeah, I had no idea who Sigfrei was at all.

Oh okay, this is what Tuxedo was talking about earlier. We just started a new main quest based in where we went and what we did. Though I wonder if the shards stuff you were doing before was your second main quest and this guy would be your third.

I still don’t know who Sigfrei is but maybe it’ll just fill us in later since Urpina and Mondo have some familiarity with him already. But starting doomsday cults around mushroom growing out of the sea is some nefarious stuff.

Cool guy though

Ah shit, OK that makes more sense. Yeah, I finished the first shard quest before I picked up dad, so this makes sense as a third quest. Second shard/stone quest seems optional but I might keep at it.

I think this is why ghosting was invented.

I think the best comparison of this game’s adventuring element is GROW and all those other flash games from the early '00s that were about interacting with elements of a seemingly static environment until you determine the underlying reactive chain which creates an overall progression. Except it’s easier to restart those games then an RPG. A bit of a non-sequitur but I think Keita Takahashi’s recent games are a lot like that too, aren’t they? Noby Noby Boy and Wattam are both about interacting with “toys” and finding how they influence each other.

Does anyone know how to make sharks appear in Mare Termina? This is the region with Taria’s workshop. I killed some sharks then talked to the Mountain God who asked for Jellyfish. Luckily after killing the sharks Jellyfish appeared shortly after since they lost their natural predators and I harvested some of them. There were four different ways interact with the Mountain God after that but I went with the easy route and now it wants shark fins. But instead of sharks I found dolphins. I followed them and did a battle but now the water is empty. I fought in a cave to pass time but there’s still nothing. Is there anything else I can do to make sharks appear?

I’ve finished this game with Taria, Balmaint and Leonard now, and just started with Urpina

… I’m having a harder time, here, at the very beginning of Urpina’s playthrough, than at any other point with any other character. I’m getting destroyed by normal difficulty encounters.

Part of the issue is that Urpina and Mondo come specialized in longswords and spears, some of the worst weapon types, and the rest of her crew isn’t too hot. Still, what the hell

I’m feeling sorry for everyone ITT who started with Urpina

you get Elysed fairly early to rinse call lightning but yeah it’s rough and when i return to this definitely going full saga with leonard

Yeah I could use someone with Call Lightning!! The only reason I’m surviving is that I gave Ogniana a rapier and she learned the poison / sleep / interrupt moves instantly

Leonard is definitely the best scenario and Leonard / Elisabeth make the most fun protagonist duo by far. And the open endness of his scenario actually makes you appreciate the linearity and storytelling of the Balmaint / Urpina ones more

It may get more difficult on subsequent playthroughs – at least the early game. I did Urp, Leo, Taria, and now Bal, and experienced something similar.

Longswords and spears rule! I really only dislike bows because the block stat is 0

I appreciate that the different weapon types have some overlap as far as utility. I want more of this game, in any form. So fancy, so free.

You can avoid shards? Thank god

Yeah the game rules and I keep coming back to it and my opinion has only ever improved, the switch says I’ve been playing it for 120 hours. Madness

Serpent > Sigfried > Shards >> Phoenix IMO I can’t stand watching the big bird slowly floating around

Bows are not great but they’re the best for quells! I’ve been trying to make longswords and spears work for like 50 hours now and it hasn’t worked. Maybe I just need to find the one formation that makes them sing, like Contingency Plan for martial arts

Longswords have a lot of utility but they’re not the best at anything which is a poor fit for this game. I do value having one cheap quell + one good block on one single weapon though

Spear techs all seem like they cost way too much for what they do, I think this is the weapon to use to force united attacks and manipulate the battlefield in general but I just get frustrated by them eating all the BP

Do you generally go for united attacks? I’ve been using the All For One formation since halfway through my first playthrough. Once you get momentum going with that, you’re pretty set.

I almost always have a spear user, and skipped longswords for one playthrough but once you get that BP cost down:

Spear
Arm of Light is ranged, puts you higher in the turn order, and does good damage
Triumvirate I believe is the strongest tech, with a chance to stun

Longsword
Demilune seems to do more damage than techs at a similar cost, lighting damage for material foes
Triple Thrust is fast with 3 hits, good damage
Thousand Blades is a pierce interrupt that hits all with a chance to stun

Both weapons have block/cover skills too

If there are some skills that aren’t sparking, try to use skills that are the same damage type, I don’t know the exact math but some skills are more likely to spark others

Now I’ve got the boss music stuck in my head and want to skip work

Yeah I guess spears would be pretty good with All for One! I tend to use a lot of formations to unlock benisons and I generally don’t go out of my way to get unites too much

I see the argument for spears and 1h longswords, it’s just that the other weapon types are really good

  • Greatswords : Great damage and a fast atk down debuff
  • Axes: all the debuffs, ridiculous interrupt damage with Hell’s fury
  • Shortswords: poison & sleep & paralysis, ok damage with interrupts, niche utility with Golden Note’s distract (I’m getting wrecked by Macha right now and would love this)
  • Martial arts: great counter tech, good stuns and debuffs
  • Clubs: best block skill, great multitarget + paralysis interrupt
  • Staves: cheap huge damage + potentially status

Hmmm I like to have some gamefaqs-like weapon tier discussion sometimes, it’s nice

I would put axes at the top if Bal didn’t miss 3 times in a row just now

Fists has to take it, Rising Sun is huge and doesn’t have a damage type, meaning it can’t be interrupted (!)

Rising Sun (like most high bp techs) barely registers for me!

It’s really great how this game still accomodates vastly different playstyles after hundreds of hours, and even doesn’t even lightly push us towards having an homogeneized similar playstyle at all, despite its nature as a numbers go up JRPG
