How do you pronounce it? Very elusive consonant

to me it sounds like you all transform starting x into a z. i make it explicitly a ks sound.

i think we can blame Olivia Newton John for at least some of this

This makes sense honestly. I don’t really know why we have x in English when sh and z also exist

i know ppl have talked about why this isnt actually that pressing an issue but i still love the idea of english orthographic reform lol

faxanadu always made me feel uncomfortable as a child cuz one of the first things my dad talked to me about was that the rollerskating movie was real and I don’t know why I thought the game was based on the movie (oh because child brain seeing so many games based on movies and I hadn’t seen the movie) so I thoguht it was about my dad for like a month until my mom explained that he was crazy, and I don’t know why she didn’t do it earlier

now it’s one of those nes games I have memorized and just play in depressive fugue states

leading x as z is the standard, is xylophone also with a leading ks?

English is dumb and there are sounds humans make that are like two different sounds combined that sound different when said separately. way too many sometimes get written as x

funny to see different pronunciations of x caused by being used in loanwords, themselves loaning the x from another language. endlessly passing the character around the table, long since forgetting whose it is and what it’s for

x works as a placeholder letter given it’s not really sensibly used anywhere else.

X-ray wouldn’t make sense as ‘ecks-ray’

wait, but at least in my experience in the US X-Ray is pronounced ecks-ray.

I never would have been caught dead playing an Ecksbocks

captainlove is making a point against spelling reform, spelling X-ray phonetically would miss the rich history and background of Röntgen’s discovery of the unknown radiation

for me, a random selection of te ones that aren’t ecksavier, specifically because when i was a kid, someone named xavier wrote into one of the x-men comics i was reading at the time to complain about people in the cartoons and movies saying it that way.

similarly, i only picked up javier after reading 1602, where he’s named carlos javier
