roguelike development

hey so I was wonder: what are the inroads to roguelike development? does it necessitate learning a programming language? I have some ideas id like to play around with

I am 25 without a finished game under my belt but like, I legitimately have more fun messing around with ideas than finishing anything all the way

Ive thought of making an edu-ware roguelike where you have to answer foreign language vocab quizes to hit monsters and block etc.

Roguelikes are hard to do.

From what I know about you, I think you should read the Spelunky book if you want to start.

Nah, you can make one in anything. RPG Maker, Klik & Play, w/e.

(Totally recommend finishing a game some time though! Even if you just spend two hours on it)

It would definitely help to learn programming or at the very least have your algorithmic thinking on point. You know, for the procedural generation and stuff.

I recommend reading Derek Yu’s book on Spelunky where he goes through his process in some detail: https://www.amazon.com/Spelunky-Boss-Fight-Books-Book-ebook/dp/B01CYVHYSS

I’d say you do need to learn to program, but only to an intermediate level. It’s one of things Derek Yu talks about in his book, he had some self-doubt seeing that he wasn’t as good of a programmer as some of his peers, but he eventually realized he knew enough to make an indie game and it didn’t really matter.

Derek Yu’s Spelunky book is currently part of a bundle
