My friend is the type of person to buy two of the highest-end graphics cards every couple of years, and he gifted me one of his two copies that he got as a pack-in.
I think Lara has more near-death experiences in the first ten minutes of this game than I’ll have in my entire lifetime. And she basically looks beat-up the whole time; there are only a few scenes where she isn’t covered in blood, dirt, snow, or a mixture of the above.
I think the beginning sequence is pretty weak, being basically a long QTE, but the game is opening up a bit and maybe intriguing me a bit more. I haven’t really played many modern action/adventure games. This game seems maybe like Uncharted mixed with a modern Far Cry, although I’ve only played the latter so I could be off a bit.
The game is pretty! And it runs better than the other game I’ve been playing, XCOM 2, but I guess most things run better than that.
If I’m remembering correctly, @Father.Torque relunctantly(?) liked things about the previous game? Please speak up if I’m misrepresenting you!
EDIT: I’ve also not seen the Revenent nor played through this game. This post is basically entirely conjecture!
Somehow I didn’t think of this. This is the kind of out-of-the-box thinking I come to Selectbutton for! I also just might listen to it at work if it gets slow. I’m pretty bad at programming and listening to things at the same time, though, so maybe your idea is better.
Is this sincere or some kind of joke about how it always shows her ass at the best angle? Either way, I didn’t notice in the hour that I played last night. I’ll see if it’s notable when I play again.
So, first thoughts on this (I listened during my lunch break):
Your voice is really soothing and you’re pleasant to listen to!
We’ll see how well I can articulate different aspects of this new game and whether it subverts what you think about the previous one. I think I’m missing quite a few of the comparison points you mention in your video, so it may be a bit difficult.
I’ve probably only played a combined total of 4 hours of the first two PS Tomb Raider games, although I do think I have a sense of what you like about those games from the video. The actual tomb raiding and exploring environments is the hook for you, right? And it’s nice that there’s some skill involved in the exploration, rather than the Assassin’s Creed “hold A to explore” mechanic. I’ve always sort of thought of the first Tomb Raider as the a 3D version of the 2D Prince of Persia games. Is that a good comparison, and do those games have similar hooks and challenges?
Likewise, I haven’t played a single Uncharted game, so it’ll be tricky to see how this game stacks up to that. It sounds like your enjoyment of Uncharted comes from the over-the-top and memorable setpieces, as well as the narrative in general. I’ll certainly communicate what I think about those aspects of this game, but my descriptions may be lacking without that context.
Also, I actually already have something to say about unnecessary sexual violence in this series. So far in this game, there haven’t been any overtly sexual scenes like you described in your video. However, the way this game frames violence or danger to Lara feels weirdly voyeuristic. I’m not sure if I can describe why or how yet, but I got that feeling almost immediately. The game almost feels a little gleeful in how badly and often it beats Lara up. These moments all happen in cutscenes, too, which I think adds to that feeling. The player loses agency over Lara (who also loses agency), and just has to watch uncomfortably as things happen to her.
I think I’ll need a few more data points to confirm to myself I’m not projecting more than is actually there.
lol at “the controls suck but it just means you have to be good!” the first tomb raider is good though
I didn’t like anniversary, they took the fairly open levels and made corridors out of them. it really killed it for me.
i just tried underworld recently and i was put off by the horrible horrible opening mission/tutorial
i liked nu raider, though i havent played many modern 3d platformers. i played the first uncharted a little and hated it. i do wish it was more survival focused though. i still want that game to exist, actually. one of my favourite parts was the beach area where you just run around and explore this mostly barren area. that and the opening areas before you meet any humans.
It’s super gross. In the first game, her clothes slowly get more and more torn (and therefore reveal more and more flesh) as the game goes on, heedless of the fact that 1. most of the shit she goes through would have totally obliterated her clothes long ago and 2. she’s literally killed like hundreds of people, they probably have clothes that she can wear. Instead of a tank top now hanging in shreds over another ripped-ab-revealing skintight tank top.
The first thing you can do in the game’s tutorial (The game does not open with the tutorial. Instead it forces you to play through the pseudo-gameplay of the E3 presentation first) is attempt to shoot a bird. The cursor lights up red when hovering over the bird, but it’s not possible to actually hit it. That’s a strong fuck you to Real Lara.
Tomb Raider 10 is Tomb Raider 9 minus all the iffy bits. It’s one of the most forgettable games I’ve played in an awful long time.
I suppose I ought to try the challenge mode since it’s finally (sort of) a restoration of time trials, but the whole concept of cards confuses and frightens me.
Yeah, this game hasn’t been too interesting so far. It’s sort of middling.
Past the opening sequence, stuff hasn’t really been too gross either. (And not that I think the opening sequence was that gross; just that it made me uncomfortable with how beat up she gets).
It seems like the game tries to encourage stealth this time around (not sure how the previous game was). Enemies normally die in a single hit if attacked from stealth, but if things go south and you get spotted it’s not too hard to use brute force either.
The environments have been pretty enough. My favorite parts of this game are the optional tombs that keep popping up. These are like little self-contained environmental and traversal puzzles. Nothing is super hard (in fact, Lara Croft Go probably has harder puzzles), but I’m only in the beginning of the game so maybe they ramp up.
Lara’s clothes aren’t getting ripped up and are climate appropriate (it’s been snowy for most of my playtime). They give you four costumes to change between, and they’re all modest.
I like Lara’s idle animations a lot. She shivers as she walks around or will hold her hands up to a fire or touch walls with her hands if she walks too close to them. Maybe these are standard for AAA industry games by now, but they’re nice anyway.
EDIT: Never mind about the stealth. They just had me mow down dudes with an AK and there were explosions everywhere.
when the 2013 reboot came out I was with @Father.Torque thinking that a way better game would be to have just an island with animals + tombs + 3d platforming + crafting/survival systems and go
