RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE SBCOOP: Let’s start a cooperative

I DM’d you the meeting info!

Anyone else want to get in on the first meeting?

I do.

We got two. Can we get three?

Add me as a maybe. Post 6pm central is after 1am for me and I usually go to bed at 10pm. Also need to probably set my phone up as a webcam, which I have done before but might cause some problems, we’ll see. I’ll get Zoom set up today

Should we all do some kind of research or prepare for any topics beforehand?

Just check out https://opencollective.com/ and be prepared to say what you’re most interested in getting out of SBCoop.

The main goal here is to find two people (me and one other person) to be responsible for the bank account.

That link doesn’t work. I got the DM, thanks!

Also got a webcam and a good ass Youtuber/streamer mic, so I’m set on the technical side at least

Fixed it above too.

Hey, you coming to the zoom meeting?

I don’t know if I will make it this evening. I’m sorry. Ended up having to help with my dad.

I’m downloading the app for my phone right now. Might be able to join a minute.

Here is an invite link:

It expires in an hour:

I’ve slept on our talk and I want to be more active in the coop. I think my failure to do so the first time around was that, well, it was manifold. I was too shy to contribute and I didn’t have a plan, no course of action.

I’ve matured a bit in the meantime. I’m still shy, just not as much and that I actually went and had a chat with you all proves to me that I’m in a better place now. This time around I want to set aside some time specifically for interacting with members of the coop every week. Approach it a bit more like a real job, except that it’s fun and not marred by the things that jobs are usually marred with.

I’m working things out in detail right now and I’ll write in the discord soon. I’m a bit bummed that we’re probably not going to be building up finances anytime soon because it would help me to stay committed for sure if I paid a small amount every month into the coop and watched those funds grow. Kind of the put your money where your mouth is principle, you know?

However, it’s not a bad idea either to first focus on doing work and maybe release games and other projects that can then contribute financially. Maybe the money should come from that first, that’s motivation too.

So what I’m trying to do is shift my attention to the creative part of the endeavor and be more involved in the community to support you with your projects.

Awesome. It was a clarifying conversation for me, for sure.

My main issue now is how enormously busy I am and how little time I have for game development. The idea of simultaneously doing and talking about my game development work is really daunting.

Well, you don’t have to talk about it! I’m just offering. And I think the concept for the game you briefly outlined during the meeting is really cool. I’d like to know more for sure. But like, don’t stress it

Also, I’d offer help with freeing up your schedule a bit but I fear there’s nothing I can do, short of moving to North Carolina and doing some babysitting.

I want to help everyone in whatever way I can. Part of that involves figuring out what I can do and I usually don’t know what I can do until I make an attempt. But I can’t make an attempt unless I know what needs to be done. So we should have some place where we just keep track of what still needs to be done for each persons projects. Maybe a trello? Something where we could set goals and scope out work out for others to see so they could decide if there were any way they could contribute.

I am also too shy for my own good but I’ve learned to power through it a bit. I still have trouble taking initiative and jumping into a conversation unprompted but I can get used to that as we get more familiar with each other’s in person personas.

I am ready to take the coop to the next level, whatever we decide that to be. If it means opening a joint account and paying a monthly due I am down. If it means keeping it more informal for the time being then that is also fine.

I am also incredibly busy these days between maintaining my job and caring for my family. I don’t have kids but I’ve kind of been raising my sisters kids for a few years. Also my dad is on hospice and in poor health and requires a level of nursing care that I don’t think any of us were really prepared for but are managing well enough at the moment.

As far as my own creative endeavors I have maybe a couple hours each night to devote to them if I decide to forego recovering from the rest of my daily activities. This is probably why I’ve shifted my focus back to making comic books in the past couple months instead of continuing learning programming. I already understand how comics are made and can practice drawing a story and characters while I do other stuff like watch tv with the family or sit with my dad.

My own hump I need to get over is taking one of my projects and deciding it’s good enough to start asking money for. That’s a tricky prospect because I’ve never tried selling any of the things I make and most of the things I make I’ve never fully completed to the point where it was at least first pass “feature complete” and ready for early access or whatever. I’ve made progress on this by learning to recognize what a “final” state looks like and then start breaking down the steps needed to get there so I have a clearer mental map of the path forward. The rest is just doing the work and following through (and there’s always more work than anticipated as I’m sure everyone with more experience than me already knows).

So I’m glad we have this arrangement and I look forward to developing it further. It is interesting that a bunch of creatively inclined people who are used to working in isolation decided to try to gain something working together even if at the moment it still looks like we’ll mostly continue working in isolation. I know for my own abilities if I can’t be of any use helping you develop your work I can at least be of use helping you sell it when you’re ready to put it out there.

I use trello extensively and I think that’s certainly a good idea to have a board there for the coop.

I can think of a couple of things I’ll eventually need help with. Playtesting is one. I’ll need help with grammar and spellchecking and that’s one thing I planned on hiring someone for. I mean, it would involve reading the words cock and ass a hundred times over but hey, the work is there if anyone wants to risk their sanity over it. I’ll need fresh eyes to look over my renders and animations because sometimes you’ve stared at a thing for so long you don’t even see where things clip through each other anymore and stuff like that.

I’m not sure how to best set up the trello board but it seems that “create team” is the way to go? I’ll need the email addresses of anyone who wants to join. So I guess either send me a DM or write it in the discord?

If anyone else with more proper work experience with trello wants to do this instead feel free though

I set up a board and because I’m clueless I had to do it three times over to get it right. Anyway…

Reminder for @vincenttoups and @anothergod that you can join this if you want but if not that’s fine too! It’s there if you want it

DM me.
