rimworld gave me carpal tunnel syndrome

i’ve been thinking of making a rimworld thread literally for years but this time i’m just going to start a thread in a microblogging format. rimworld is a post dwarf fortress colony simulation game. from there, imo the major influences are d&d 3rd edition, the sims, and the sensibility one develops from spending a lot of time on reddit and wikipedia

here is the team:

All of these characters were randomly rolled: William is a professional engineer, Candice is a trust fund kid turned investigative reporter, and Coeur is a mute psychopathic assassin who can only kill stuff or do animal husbandry. She spawned in with a maximum quality crossbow that shoots darts coated in paralytic toxin.

they’re far from home in a flying tool shed equipped with a grav engine in low orbit around a lawless world on the outer rim of the galaxy. how they ended up in this situation or why they’re allied is not elaborated upon. they’ve landed on a fragment of an old orbital platform, probably to get their bearings before descending to the service.

from the ruin, william collects panels of gravite, an engineered material the team needs if they want their spacecraft to be able to carry more weight. gravships are cheap and plentiful in hard vacuum environments but they’re almost universally illegal to use on planets because they cause terrible localized earthquakes

from radio chatter it becomes clear that some ancient defense system is still active and protecting this fragment of orbital platform and a strike force of drones is on its way to neutralize the threat they pose. they’re forced to semi-crash land the thing on marginal terrain and break the thrusters on impact - but the drones aren’t following them

You can see on the map there that Coeur has broken the seal and the Gravship is beginning to fill with air. They have packaged food for a few days and a few hand weapons. None of them know anything about medicine or growing food. Candace is psychologically incapable of using weapons. The situation isn’t anywhere near as dire as it would be in real life but they have some urgent tasks to complete on the horizon of days if they’re going to survive.

william immediately sets to work repairing the thrusters with some spare parts from the shelves. everything on the shelves is randomly jumbled together, like everything in it was hastily thrown in and random because it was being stolen. william is going to move the thrusters to the side of the gravship and then start extending it south until it resembles a train car. expanding the gravship is much, much slower than building regular structures but there’s little to build with around here, so we’ll make do

coeur and candice go swimming in the river because they’re bored from being in the flying shed

mathematically bored - note here that Candice has a Chemical need meter - she needs to take drugs on a regular basis of she’ll get antsy. most drugs will do, even beer - the important thing is that the team will need to produce them, trade for them, or loot them regularly to keep her from breaking down psychologically.

but coeur was randomly determined to be a stoner and spawned in with 21 joints so sourcing drugs isn’t a pressing need. at some point it would behoove the team to lock her in a jail cell until she dries out and loses the dependency, but with a crew of 3 we need everyone contributing all they can to the group at all times

as previously stated, coeur can’t do any work except hunting and taming animals

the team is going to need a butcher’s shop and a way of storing meat. it’s worth spending some steel to build a shed for that; we should be able to reclaim a lot of it before we take off and wreck the launch site in the process

there are some player ruins here. these are pieces of people’s real saved games added in by the real ruins mod. here we have a comms console, a late early game item, that we could fix up with some spare parts and provide with power in order to interact with orbital trade ships and talk to nearby settlements

to the east, there are the ruins of a hospital - some of the equipment is still usable, most notably some heat pumps. we’ll fix those up with some spare parts and use them to make a walk-in freezer on the gravship and store meat in it. the rest of the surviving equipment, we can loot and trade for essentials later

there’s a hostile drone in the river

Coeur’s fancy crossbow is useless here so she resorts to the breach axe, a shitty weapon against everything but structures.

it’s enough to keep the thing occupied while william hoses it down with machine pistol fire. the pacing is very d&d. this does not hold for all combat in this game

coeur is struck with a flechette from the drone before taking it down. her torso is down to 28 / 40 hp from the single blow - from the name “spiner” i thought they’d be toxic but there’s nothing about toxin here.

the second drone drops without further casualties on our side

now we have two priorities, providing a clean environment where our best hunter can recover from her wounds, and securing a steady or large food supply

the gravship is now a hospital and if it gets dirty coeur may die of an infection

i scroll the viewport around while everyone’s asleep and find an intact hospital bed with a vitals monitor. amazing! infections in the wake of minor skirmishes could become way less likely if we make use of these

choice of ideological focus for when the team accrues enough ideology points

  • Ritualist (Invoke subspace transhumanist nanotech space cthulhus to get things done)
  • Cannibal
  • Party Life (Mandatory alcohol-based work culture)
  • Mechanoid Supremacy (venerate mechanoids but also enables a specialist role who can hack into enemy drones and make them explode)
  • Corporate (Dress shirts, paperwork, etc)
  • Royalist (Noble titles, expensive furniture, luxury)
  • Healthcare (Everyone wants the best possible hospital)

not sure how seasonal flooding will affect ship construction

coeur can fish too - that stack of fish would be on the shore if not for seasonal flooding. i think floodwaters should be a bit more dangerous - notice that it’s a 60 celsius heat wave outside, but it doesn’t matter yet because everyone has a space suit. they could wear the space suits all day for months before they began to break down significantly, but break down they will

the interaction system is very obviously some madlibs shit. i prefer that to llm integration but it could be done better

a friend’s been filling me in on some minute details in this. apparently this is the optimal prison layout:

because when a prison break happens, it searches for other prison cells in a 20-tile radius of the escapee, and gives them a chance to join the breakout

When I played this game, I would retrieve dismembered raiders, give them physical rehab and medical care in a prison/hospital until they joined us and if they refused I would shoot them and make leathers out of their corpses to sell to the locals.

Oh my goodness a Rimworld thread. I was just thinking about playing again after telling some friends about all the incredible ways I’ve lost before.

I will post my stories later this week, and might start a new colony, once I get tired of UFO 50.

our mute assassin savant killed a bison in two shots. i was prepared to have her haul ass back onto the ship. the first shot paralyzed it and the second shot went through the heart. i love that the game started me with this op bullshit. it looks like food isn’t going to be a problem once the freezer and nutrient past dispenser are ready (none of them can cook)

looks like party life is in the lead but if you group the next two together as “event horizon bullshit” that edges it out by one vote - so i’ll start building toward a frat house of a freebooter crew that eventually gets way too dark with it for most people’s tastes

i haven’t done the full anomaly dlc arc yet so this is a good pretext for going through all of that for the first time

optimal except your wardens now spend all day walking between jail cells

i kind of want to make this design work now though

does the party crew give sanctuary to a knight whose guard were killed by a rat (???) in exchange for brownie points with the empire? honor points can buy noble titles, which grant psychic powers and other perks. you can get honor points by doing quests or giving the empire gold or prisoners in tribute

it seems like the party crew may be against the honor points for prisoners thing, unless the empire also has the party meme (i’m going to edit the npc ideologies in dev mode now and then to make them more interesting, it’s the best way to interact with the ideology system i think)

what does the crew do

  • ok sure, let’s let the knight hang out until the shuttle arrives in exchange for 8 honor points
  • fuck that knight, they can handle the rat and wait for their shuttle somewhere else
  • fuck that knight, let’s call them over and murder them hahaha

i’m asking because this affects our relationship with a culture that has a whole dlc based around it. it’s like saudi royalty aesthetics with tacky displays of wealth backed up by guys in all black operator outfits

the psychic powers are cool but there are other, more difficult and sporadic ways to get them

oh right i’ll turn off dev mode i was using it to look at ideology stuff

i’m going to avoid reloading on this run but i’m not doing a full on ironman
