The thing I object to + what feels emblematic of the game as a whole is that it’s quantum superposition HUNK; that character is HUNK if you want it to be, but nothing ever refers to him by name, he very intentionally doesn’t have the helmet, his body disappears if you go back to the area, he has no meaningful integration into the story. It’s a cameo and/or an invocation that either means everything or nothing, where all possible options pander to the individual player’s taste.

Like far from being worthy of Twin Peaks even at its nadir, what it feels like is “Somehow Palpatine returned”/“Oh my god – that’s Glup Shitto!”

if they had done anymore with him, named him, gave him greater integration into the story, the exact same helmet from 1998, etc, that just seems like that would be the unnecessary pandering? the way they did it seems the better way. he got exactly the amount of attention he should of got and no more. nameless head of the elite guard of umbrellas final lab, dispatched without a big todo. maybe they’ll fuck it up later but this is what I have to go on now and whether cowardice or restrained tasteful choices was the reason the result was the result.

no what your describing is how I feel about leon taking off his glove and putting a ring on his hand in the last cutscene in the distance out of focus. enough out of sight that they can disregard it if they change their mind about it by the next game.

It’s how he’s depicted in every single other iteration. Omitting it this time out while also calling him “The Commander” instead of the name we know him by are both among a preponderance of creative choices that are all pointed, deliberate, in obvious ways, and this is conspicuously done in a game that actually comes down decisively on him as a character and a not a costume: He dies, except maybe not really, except maybe it wasn’t even really him. It wants to have it both ways and this is clocked from the moment it happens, which gives it the substance of smoke, reduces it to nothing in dramatic terms; a gesture, a non-event.

A lot of the game is like this.

they also have zombies in this resident evil in a totally hackneyed move by capcom

I don’t get the sense that re9 is doing an homage to the original games, despite literally and figuratively retreading old terrain. RE2make (and obviously REmake) felt reverent of the ideas in those games they were remaking. But everything outside of the Care Center was more like fan service than anything else.

Just trying to rationalize why I love those two games so much but want to vomit watching any of the cutscenes in the last quarter of re9.

RE9 contains something I’ve wanted to see in one of these since I first saw the words “Umbrella Corporation”: it has a product catalogue with prices. A Licker will set you back a cool $12M. If you want to bring home a Nemesis please come in for a consolation, the price is variable.

Still find it amusing the Lickers were such a success story because as far as I recall, they just fucked around reinjecting viruses into zombies and ended up with meaty xenomorph knock-offs.

They’ve got to toss some Hunters at Leon in the inevitable expansion, put him through his paces.

Giant Snake, too, please

I wasn’t able to play video games for a few days because I was busy diagnosing and then dealing with a plumbing leak in my house but that’s taken care of finally so tonight I was able to get back to RE9 and finish it. I loved every minute of this ridiculous ass video game. All 14 hours, 45 minutes and 27 seconds of it. It is imo Peak Video Games. Fan service-y, sure, but they’re giving you the best of both versions of Resident Evil.

And the ending… well, the canonical ending is a nice capstone to the series in a way. Almost like they’re ready to end it here… Or maybe end the versions of it that everyone is familiar with by now. I suspect RE10, whenever it comes, will likely do some things few are expecting. Sounds like it will probably be a Chris Redfield RE game, with perhaps all that implies.

Going to check out this hard mode I guess. Will be interesting to see if they can make this harder without just making it more tedious.

Also despite myself I am feeling a hankering to dip back into RE7 vr sometime but I really need some headphones first. So maybe I will get some headphones that work with psvr before I do that. It is such a chore to set up.

I’m attempting the 4 hour run on casual without using health items or blood crafting. I have one more component to find in Raccoon City but I need the fuel first and I’m already at 3:07 so I’m thinking I may not make it on my first attempt. I spent too much time in the care center remembering which order to do things in and now I’m doing it again in Raccoon City haha.

But I’ll get enough challenge points from avoiding healing items and blood collection to purchase infinite ammo so that should make subsequent attempts at least a lot more entertaining.

My 4 hour run attempt came in at around 5:36 or so. Will need to work on that since I think 4 hours is very doable if you don’t screw around too much or get distracted.

After unlocking infinite ammo, the carbine for Leon and that semi auto pistol for Grace I started a new game on insanity mode. The first zombie I encountered transformed into a blister head and then killed me after emptying a full clip from the carbine into its head. Okay they’re not playing around that really is insane. So now I’m just using the requiem and trying to get achievements I missed the last two times while pick through this at my own pace. Speedrunning insanity mode would be a decent challenge, I think. I’m already anticipating the areas where I won’t have the requiem though. Crafting as many stabilizers as I can up front to boost my shooting ability with regular guns.

The part with the girl in the basement will be difficult, since here when she catches you she just kills you. No more being able to take a hit from her and survive, I don’t think. She killed me every time she caught me in the beginning area. She chases you a lot more.

They’ve already announced there will be story dlc. Hopefully they will also release an RE4 style mercenaries mode. That would just about complete the package.

It makes sense that the crown jewel of the Capcom 5 was so groundbreaking it would have such a lasting effect.
