RESIDENT EVIL.... (Part 1)

the best part of the RE3make was when I missed the grenade launcher in the sewers, while playing on hard mode, so I didn’t have enough ammo to beat the nemesis fight on the top of the building. that fight felt pretty good to me, so I kept doing it until I got it down more or less perfectly, so that I could confirm that, in fact, I could not beat it and would have to start the game over.

the demo is out on steam now for anyone without a PSWhatever. same timed nonsense, but an hour was enough for me to beat it at least, and I got lost for a bit and died once. it’s pretty good! I haven’t played RE7 so nothing to really compare it to, and it’s a pretty limited demo, but I had fun with it.

though i have played dozens of hours of raid mode, i have finally beat the actual campaign of revelations 2 just days before village drops. i now know where all the fucks in the re 2 remake script came from! weird pacing in that it keeps the episodic structure of the first game, but without the restraints of a handheld system every segment is between 40 minutes - 2 hours. i thought it was mostly fine and it definitely feels better to move and shoot in than its predecessor, but keep in mind that i played single player and this is designed around asymmetric coop.

damn, you’re making me worried that I should have finished Rev2 before RE8. I kind of wrote that game off after a couple false starts, but I would not at all be surprised to see it proves plot relevant in Village.

there will be pages from kafka stories strewn about the romanian village

rev 2 is cool and raid mode mode is really fun, if too easy.

review embargo ends at 11am EST

Is there anything wrong with the PS4 port of REmake because that’s probably the only way I’m ever going to play the original game.

I mean if you have to play it that way then yes, it functions. Capcom likely lost the source for the prerendered backgrounds and the end result looks like a 480p picture with a photoshop sharpen filter applied.

Note things such as the shadow on the bird cage missing from the wall, and all the colours being off.
However, REZero looks a lot better in the remaster, so maybe Capcom had the original assets, or just did a better job.

revelations 2 is a great time. the RE1 remake HD port is okay, it’s better if you play it on PC because you can use reshade filters to undo the crushed blacks/oversaturation that the source material was put through to “enhance” it. a lot of the missing visual detail is due to that, but I wasn’t aware of how drastic some of the changes were as seen in @rasterradio’s post. also the ambient sound has way too much artificial reverb added for some reason. the original gamecube release still looks terrific on a CRT set!

I played the village demo. it feels so much like RE4, even though neither section had much combat. I like it, it’s exceeding the low expectations I set for it, but it’s hard to be excited for it. probably will still pick it up on friday. now that reviews are coming out they are all comparing it to RE4 as well, which is dampening things for me. I don’t really want another RE4! especially since they are remaking it with their fancy new engine or whatever. oh well, at least 7 and RE2 remake were good!

locked into an eternal cycle of rebooting the series to get back to its survival horror roots then making a more action oriented sequel to draw in more fans

Yeah I heard it’s RE 4-2 from a lot of sources already. Kinda glad that I’m playing 4 right now and know what to expect. Village is presumably not as scary or coherent in tone as 7 but honestly, I don’t exactly need another 7 because that one scares me enough already. I’m down for a good reimagination of 4 in first person. Without all the super goofy shit, hopefully. I know y’all like that, it’s just not for me.

Also, I heard the PC version only has raytracing on AMD GPUs?? Who the fuck buys an AMD for raytracing, that’s bullshit! Now I kinda don’t want to play it until they patch in Nvidia support. I still have 4 and 7 to finish anyway, so, meh… I mean I’ll download it tomorrow and might try it out and the raytracing isn’t super noticeable in this game anyway… Still pisses me off if it’s true though. Maaaybe it’s just the pre-release version that all the reviewers got that’s like that?

Oh and it’s 45 fps on PS5 with raytracing on, so the system is already showing its age a couple months after release lol

Consoles fucking blow, man. I’m kinda down that I’m trying to buy a PS5 but it’s kinda necessary if I want to play games with my girlfriend and, well, she’s paying for it in the end but still, this sucks. Consoles have been a rip off for the last couple of generations

re: performance, fps on a 1060 was like hovering around the 20s on the default ‘variable’ setting, when i set the cap to 120 it was locked above 60 if anyone’s having that problem

I really hope this is the last first person RE, RE2 remake sold really well, so hopefully Capcom won’t be afraid to go in that direction for the future.
