Reasons for electronic gaming

The slight problem with that in the video game context is because of their software nature, the vast majority of VG are not really brand new games but merely incremental updates to the original game/ruleset that started the series and genre.

So an appropriate statement would be that the problem is when these updates aren’t making significant enough steps forward or sideways to create a different flavor and when there isn’t much variety in aesthetics. Or are even going backwards, with dumbing down of mechanics and level design, Ubification of the whole thing and such.

re. the OP outside of just having imprinted on them i still have affection for the choppy collage nature of this format, for its structural weirdnesses, + for the way the aimless buzzing distractedness of videogames tends to set them at odds to the traditional prefab narratives of feeling. (although they are certainly doing their best to remedy this !!)

i don’t play that many now partly because the handful of ways the industry has standardised converting that distraction into narratives of art, accomplishment and progress are both kind of boring to me and also depend on forms of energy that I no longer have to spare!
