The slight problem with that in the video game context is because of their software nature, the vast majority of VG are not really brand new games but merely incremental updates to the original game/ruleset that started the series and genre.
So an appropriate statement would be that the problem is when these updates aren’t making significant enough steps forward or sideways to create a different flavor and when there isn’t much variety in aesthetics. Or are even going backwards, with dumbing down of mechanics and level design, Ubification of the whole thing and such.
