GT 64 (N64) - the frame rate is really bad. Even in first person it barely holds 15. The physics are fun, at least. If someone could hack this to get it to run at at least 20 consistently, it seems like it might be pretty fun to spend more time with. Challenging to recommend at its hardware performance, though
Iād recommend it but Iād also recommend Stunt Race FX, Iāve never been bothered by low frame rates in old 3D games.
on SNES SRFX is the best-performing 3D racer on the platform (it is the only 3D racer on the platform, really*)
on N64 GT 64 is one of the absolute worst
*i guess thereās race drivinā and that terrible motocross game
WRC comes out tomorrow, is anyone here brave/foolish enough to find out if itās good or not
I threw down for my loyalty preorder discount. I will see! People have been worried about pivot points or some shit, but Iām hoping it feels like a real codemasters rally game. The previews Iāve checked out look promising!
havenāt sunk my teeth into WRC Generations yet (bububut itās not like it has been out for over a year or sumthinā ), and idk, have a feeling that if I donāt give that some love, i wonāt after playinā the newest one.
Also the roster in WRC Generations is really good, any challenger gotta beat that first!
been playing a fair bit of Cruisān USA on the N64 (thinking about spending some time with the arcade version in MAME afterward, assuming the game runs OK there).
game is cool, but absolutely brutal. the controls are pretty twitchy on the default sensitivity, but youāll suffer if you turn it down as your effective turning radius is reduced as well. the level of reaction you need to avoid cars is pretty nuts. chicago is still bonkers with that L train section at the end.
the music is so janky compared to the arcade game, but thereās a certain charm to that. by World they were replicating the arcade music almost exactly, so thereās something weirdly endearing about the slightly shittified music here.
I agree that 64 Cruisān USA is more fun because itās excited to be almost an arcade game
I have a fondness for Exotica because it was in the local pool hall for a long time and I got really good at it
Redout deux impressiones!
similiar to part uno, takes a while to wrap your head around when to use left stick/right stick only/both, and then thereās the digi-pad to align your car ship for a smooth landing to make matters more complicated.
Jumping into a different ship really makes a difference here, and also takes some time to get used to, so i finally started to do the first training/tutorial cup events and won the ESA default ship, which feels (surprisingly) understeery (compared to the Mantis, which i kinda grew fond of in time trialling, every two months for an hour or so.
Track design is sometimes (unfortunately) pretty obscure, i.e. you start aiming at things only to realize that this is an alternate path/a kill-plane prevents you from landing there, until you have memorized what is/isnāt the Racetrack. Brought back memories from playing Xtremeā¢G on the N64 and that felt similarly like you had to memorize pretty much the whole track before you could start having fun.
Donāt know what to think about the time trial leaderboards (at least on ze XBX4), because it is way too easy to put the ship into double-digit territory, even before throwing seriously tuned ships at it. (otoh, iirc my sub-par lap on place 75 is a Minute away from top three on one of the shorter tracks, so there seems to be quite a gap in terms of skill around the top 20 or so.
On the plus side:
Soundtrack doesnāt even try to pretend to have mainstream appeal, leans immediately into techno, now THATāS more like it
Also loving that they threw every pigment in the universe at this game, it feels like a next gen racer, and we have not enough of these tbh!
Also love that they went all-in with the track design! On one of the tracks, if you put down the Controller, gravity pulls your ship to the right until it hits the energy barrier/āguardrailā or falls off the track. Mt Fuji track and Neo-Tokyo feel a bit like driving around in a pachinko-machine!
all in all, even if it lacks in execution, i LOVE what it stands for ā it makes one feel like there could be a new Ridge Racer in the vein of R4 just around the corner!
verdict: four G out of five!
more redout2 impressionestas:
kinda nifty idea of putting a G.Moroder track into the tutorial-events, because i find myself going back and clearing events one by one, and enjoying dem beatz.
Also, slowly wrapping my head around tilting and strafing/when or when NOT to use em. The speed-rush of stacking boosts on Fuji is starting to feel sooomewhat like F-Zero GX, if only for one or two seconds, but at least this heart does feel Something.
Holding out a bit longer (and want to do more races) before upgrading to 4.5, but this is growing on me.
Does anyone have an opinion on Fast Racing Neo on Wii U? I only tried it briefly but I was getting the impression it might be one of the better F-Zero clones.
LEGO 2K Drive (PS5, 2023) is alright. the driving is quite fun! your vehicle transforms when it gets to different terrain, pretty snazzy. game reeks of desperate live-service bullshit, though, so weāll see how that plays out
KartRider: Drift (PS5, 2023) - the drifting is great! not sure if i can vibe withā¦ everything else, though. the live service stench is even louder here, and this is one actually is a freemium thing, soā¦ welp lol. still, big budget kart racing that isnāt mario kart? iāll dabble
I was hoping this could scratch the itch Iāve had for years to find a new Burnout Paradise
hey, tbh thatās exactly my sentiment, have been circling this and waiting for a price drop to justify it as a somewhat-bargain splurge (exactly what this kind of game should feel like ā Hot Shot racing and Redout 2 have both been sub 20$ gems, and this could be a legit successor!)
Sadly, I played it when it was free for a weekend on Steam, and it left a bad taste in my mouth.
Nooooooo say it aināt so
The lengths people were going to (are still going to?) to keep the somewhat obscure disc-based PC release of OutRun 2006: Coast to Coast (supposedly based on the PS2 version) viable:
i got the pc port up and running on the steam deck recently
