first four seasons are great, fifth season is garbage
seasons 2-4 were directed by Ikuhara (later famous for Rev Girl Utena)
season 1 was directed by Junichi Sato (who isn’t exactly famous but has done so much good stuff, ranging from Goldfish Warning to Princess Tutu)

I would say suffer all the way through season 1, especially if you’re going in blind. Even if you take your phone out and half-watch. It’s repetitive, but that just makes the big plot reveal more interesting, and the finale more deeply shocking. You really feel the characters at the end, like damn they had a pretty chill routine going & that might have been more than they signed up for. That S1 finale was what turned me into an actual fan

you’ve probably already seen an ikuhara directed episode! His first episode was 6, in which usagi disguised herself as a musician to infiltrate a jazz club and the animation is remarkable
