Quick Questions XV: Episode Prompto

the only interesting tech stuff these days is in aliexpress finds and boutiques — most popularly in keyboards but also 3d printers, audio hardware, etc. anything based on simple circuits has never been more varied because it’s relatively easy to design and order your own PCBs, but big advantages in silicon and manufacturing are insurmountable

I had a pixel 1 xl until they did an update that drained my battery in 20 minutes so I got a pixel 6 and it works fine and runs everything and is fucking huge but it doesn’t have a tiny dog picture included and for that I feel robbed the truth is all phones suck and have timers to make them break in x years even if you take good care of them, so just get the one that feels best in your hand

all I want is an e ink phone for forever battery with no color and a slide-out actual keyboard

fwiw, turns out that Sony’s xperia phones are somewhat ok’ish, as long as they are getting updates…and, of course, lineage OS always supports the models i didn’t buy or which have different hardware components, so that it isn’t just an ‘slightly edit the cfg file and you’re fine’-job, so ymmv.

their camera and video apps are impressive though!

yeah they tried to fuck my phone over with the newest version of android and i had to take a series of convoluted steps to go back to the old version, consequently wiping my entire phone in the process. i’m happy again on android 11 but it is infuriating

my pixel XL can only turn on for like 5 minutes with a fully charged battery now before the OS crashes and restarts my whole phone. This just started happening arbitrarily one day. AT&T sent me a 5g replacement phone and it like literally didn’t have a brand and was just as slow despite being “new.” I hate cellphones

Based on personal experience, Final Fantasy 15?? (That’s just my weird kid don’t get that)

The real answer is that no kid will care about any traditional console game as much as they do about Minecraft, Roblox and Fortnite, just get them an ipad and call it a day

That’s more or less what i thought tbh (apparently they are already into roblox (is there enmity between minecraft and roblox players or is that type of thing out of date too?)) …

(ipad’s are like 10x more expensive than console games tho)

But they are cheaper than PS4s! I get that doesn’t help in your specific circumstance, I was just being flippant

Yeah I think as far as today’s kids are concerned, there are only 4 or 5 games: Minecraft, Roblox, Fortnite, Among Us, and I forget what the 5th one is (FNAF?). The main trend is these games tend to be online sandbox hangout type games, or funny games you can just mess around in.

So I guess either get them some VBucks or I dunno, Goat / DEEEER Simulator?

this is why I appreciate highlight reel, because I feel like it helps me at least keep vaguely aware of multiplayer ur-games but in like, a tonal package that agrees with me

The kids are powerful attracted by Fuckaround energy these days, which actually I find a heartening development. Certainly better than trying to grind out chocobos to get Knights of the Round or whatever the hell I was doing in middle school

I think you should be like me and just not have a cell phone or any social media stuff. Be an old, basically.

Video games have become toys so now someone needs to make toys with more rules to turn the tides again

There are literally kids that still play all the Nintendo stuff including Zelda and Mario. The idea that they don’t want to play traditional games at all is baffling to me.

But what Fortnite has is: it’s on everything and it’s free.

Kids today would probably emulate the hell out of stuff if they could access it as easily as we all could but it isn’t so they don’t.

Honest answer is Minecraft, Fortnite, and a headset to talk to other kids with some adult supervision occasionally.

There are kids who still play traditional games, but my personal experience is that my kid plays ways more of those two than anything else. He does have a game pass account, so he plays some stuff from there (Forza 5 and Halo, really), but his focus is always getting back to Fortnite, because that is where a lot of his friends are.

heard my neighbours kid screeching “i’ll fucking stab you [every slur going]” down a headset enough times i’m afraid i’d be the obsessive overprotective parent constantly surveilling them

i went through the mental work of thinking about doing this like 5 years ago and ultimately while i’m sure it would create some real peace of mind, it would make my life multiple times harder in ways that will probably outweigh any other mental benefits

this is almost me now, anyway. not wanting a new iphone doesn’t really have anything to do with this, though. i am just really sick of buying the same thing over and over.
