Quick Questions XIV: A Question Reasked (Part 1)

thanks!

so i got ffxv a few weeks ago and played for a few hours, it hasn’t really ā€˜clicked’ yet… i want to like it based on the aesthetic but it’s really not doing itself any favors.

i know there are people who like the game on here, for those of you who do… is this the sort of thing where the game takes a few hours to really get going, or is it like… if i find both the plot and the battle system totally incomprehensible is it just going to stay that way for the rest of the game? i’m still in the desert area.

The baffling doesn’t stop being baffling. You should be concetrating in the dude emotions and hangouting.

I started becoming fond of it around when I tried to collect nicer recipes for ignis to cook. Something about the interaction of going from restaurant to restaurant so that my buddy could get new ideas for campside meals grounded the experience for me.

But yes the first few hours are roughest in terms of plot and mechanics. I was able to breeze past them because I was in ā€œlaugh at the trainwreckā€ mode at the time.

Anyway be sure to change the combat system to Wait instead of Active

Yeah, I’m in to the atmosphere and general hang-out ness of it all, but the battle system itself just seems kind of inscrutable and floaty

This definitely helps, but I feel like in the early game at least there is something weird about the progression, in that you start out with all 4 party members but none of them can really like… do anything yet? Meanwhile I level up all the time and I’m checking off boxes on the skill tree that all seem essentially meaningless. Like combat just seems very simple even though I don’t understand what’s happening on the screen.

I’m more accustomed to the typical flow of a JRPG where you start with basically one option in battle, and then every time you add a new one by leveling up or adding skills it kind of multiplies what you are able to do in any given situation.

In this case I feel like there are already dozens of choices to make in any battle, and every time I level up things change slightly in 3 or 4 different ways, but none of them actually seem necessary or to even make any difference at all…?

Does this go away, or is it just what the game is like?

It does feel understandable eventually

Is Bushido Blade a good game to just pick up and fuck around in with some friends? Do we need to know anything going in?

No way, lack of knowledge will increase mystery + hilarity

  1. get that e3 playstation samurai game that wasn’t sekiro or nioh
  2. revive the Gameshark brand and its products
  3. put in that 1hp for all enemies + self code and also maybe a code that skips all dialog

Ghosts of Tsushima?

yes, that one

bad news, it’s synchronized animation combat (Arkham, For Honor) all the way down

Anyone play any Randomizers? I started playing Z1R to get into it, but apparently the newer versions of it are not too far away from Z1Roguelike (randomized dungeons, randomized shops). I’m curious how replayable Randomizers can get while still feeling grounded.

Okay so if I were to get a keyboard (the musical kind) to just goof around on (but that I could also hook up to my computer as a midi…thingy) what would be a good entry level keyboard?

I use the keyboard that came with rock band 3 lol

Not that I’ve done anything more than getting it working as a midi device on my old ipad and making boop noises in garage band

hmm, what’s your price range?

Guys, what are the best FPS to play as of today? I have been playing most of them until the beginning of 2000, then I switched to other genres.
Back then, my favourites were Half Life, Unreal and SiN.
I wouldn’t be interested in games that were ā€œgreatā€ at the time they came out, and that now are obsoleted by other, better games. I would like to play the best specimen we have as of today.
Does Half life 2 (plus episodes) still make sense? Stalker? Which others?
I have seen some Top 50s around, such as on rockpapershotgun, but I cannot trust a list where the original Doom comes on top (for reasons I could detail, but right now I don’t want to go off topic from my own question  )
