Quick Questions XIV: A Question Reasked (Part 1)

In an alternate reality where I’m a lonely millionaire I’d be working on a mod of the game that solely uses the gust jar

That pretty much exists in the form of Anodyne 2 and it totally rules.

everyone who says link’s awakening is the best zelda is to blame for this

it’s either links awakening or the original, so

I feel like I’ve been told this before and having played it I did not quite have the itch scratched, I want something a bit more mechanically deep

The graphics.

has anyone made a mod yet that just removed kinstones entirely from the game? If so, then maybe. Kinstones are Aonuma at his maximum “The chime happens after the cutscene” dementia.

incorrect, I like it because it’s one of the shortest 2D zelda games to play

wholly agree with this, as someone who prefers 2D zeldas out of the whole series

i really love the implementation of the puzzle items, i think it’s clever but not in a way that tries to strangle my brain. the puzzles are easy, like children-easy, and i’m okay with that. I play zelda to hit things with my sword, like zelda 1, not tryna play baba is you.

also, I just like being Small. and the picori are incredibly cute. there’s a lot of charm and polish to this game, it’s definitely a Standard GBA Adventure Game and I respect it for not trying to reinvent the wheel.

is this The Good One of these handheld emulation things? or is there a Better One coming soon i should wait for

they are all pretty comparable afaik, which usually boils down to:

  • the buttons are fine but not great
  • some busted version of android that has an interface like a GBA flashcart and lags in menus like a low-spec roku
  • theoretically high-spec enough for PS1 and slightly newer platforms but no one really knows how to ship a good low-end emulator of 32-bit platforms anymore so the experience is poor
  • decent emulation of older platforms, but if that’s the whole value proposition, you might rather wait and see how long it takes for mister cores to be ported to the analogue pocket with microsd support
  • alternately, if you do want a handheld that can run up to gamecube stuff, invest in controller attachments for your iPhone + retroarch ARM build toolchains + (optionally) very powerful wifi so you can also use it for PS4/steam streaming at that point

and yeah analogue are kind of not great in certain respects and their hardware is too boutique but I still wouldn’t buy into an dedicated emulator hardware ecosystem that isn’t documented + open source

I like how we’re treating these as if they’re in the same price bracket

FWIW, I bought a GPD XD three years ago, which was an Android version of the GPD Win DS-like clamshell you see going around, and like most Android devices I’ve messed with, it has aged rather poorly and performance, battery life, and reliability has only gotten worse over time. I haven’t done anything significant to this device other than install Retroarch and reicast, so it’s not me loading it up with a bunch of garbage either. The input lag in emulators is pretty noticeable too. If this is how poorly a brand name product performs, I don’t even want to think about how the generics must be.

I don’t think there’s a lot of evidence that hardware without the typical flaws really exists at $100 retail, you’d probably have better luck getting an older android phone at that point than you would buying something new

I have the Ambernic RG350 and it exceeded my expectations but I didn’t like the positions of the buttons too much. As a handheld emulation device for stuff prior to polygonal era, it’s pretty exceptional. I haven’t fucked too much with PSX stuff on it because I generally prefer to just the PSP Go for that (but obviously that’s not applicable to everyone). I’d just get that for like, $60 vs paying $98 or whatever for the 351 if you just want to play PSX and prior stuff. (ETA to clarify, I mean I’d get the RG350 over the 351, not get a PSP Go)

There is always a better one coming soon but I expect it is going to take another year for Dreamcast to be better than “well you can technically play it”.

That one gets good reviews and @villain could speak more if the controls are doing. Compared to the RP2 everyone says the Anbernic ones feel better.

I spent a long time looking at the differences between these things and between Anbernic devices the big difference between the 351P and the 350 is that the 1p is slightly more powerful so it can handle some games that the 350 couldn’t but the screen is an odd aspect ratio (3:2) so while its fine for handheld systems (perfect for gba, specifically) it scales worse for consoles. This blog/channel is helpful for comparisons/resources.

I ended up getting the 1P and I’m happy with, I put on the “ArkOS” custom firmware and it works great. It has an online updater which is neat - and Cave Story is built into it which is also neat. But if the resolution thing bothers u u might wanna get one of the 350 models

How are the stick button shoulders? My main take away from the Retroid Pocket 2 is the buttons feel great at first but all take just enough to be tiring to use. Also that it takes a good 45 seconds to turn on is annoying but ancient Android what are you going to do.

With the bumpers I don’t have any particular complaints, in terms of pressure u need to apply I would compare the outer shoulders (L1/R1) to maybe like the Joy-Con triggers, its a lil odd that they’re so loud & I think they could be gentler but its never felt particularly strenous. Playing Drill Dozer which is a lot of bumpers and the thing wearing me out has been how strongly the thing vibrates, not the buttons.

That said, I haven’t played any PS1 games so I can’t speak to anything that requires using the inner L2/R2 too altho they seem pretty similar (if maybe a bit easier to press?), although I did set L2 to be the retroarch hotkey and thats been working fine/I’ve never hit it accidentally while trying to use the other bumper.
& ya i tried to avoid any sort of android device due to collected memories from years of living w/ long-outdated android cell phones

if i play fallout 1 am i supposed to play with any mods or just get in there

I played through it with just a resolution fix and it was alright.
