Quick Questions XIV: A Question Reasked (Part 1)

Honestly, I believe all of that but I’m also deeply concerned it will just amplify whatever RSI issues I’ve got going on and I’ll have to turn it off anyway :frowning:

How different are the rumble waveforms compared to the actual sounds you’re using in-game? I recall reading this but I always imagined that although waveforms are used to generate the haptics, waveforms of “real sounds” might not always produce the haptic sensation you’d actually want because you’re also trying to communicate the touching of a physical thing, not just the sound the physical thing makes. But I don’t actually know how any of that works. I just assumed something could never be as easy as a marketing interview makes something out to be.

But I amazed at those youtube videos that isolated the sound of the vibrations and how well those conveyed whatever surface Astrobot ran on.

Oh, 100%. I mentioned this in the Games I Played thread but the first time I played COD I thought I could feel a lingering sensation in my hands after my session. I haven’t noticed anything like that since so it may have just been me over thinking the new rumble sensation for the first time or maybe I’m just numb to it now. But I do wonder if varying trigger resistances + stronger rumble feedback could accelerate any adverse affects to hands long term caused by controller usage. Even aside from people who have developed hand issues for one reason or another, god knows no one takes care of their hands despite how much repetitive stress they endure in daily activities.

It’s not perfect, but it’s close enough that I have a hard time critiquing it when audio does a first-pass based on their sounds.

I can confirm that my left index finger now hurts after a night of playing COD. The resistance for ADS is too dang high.

After not playing console games regularly for a couple of years I find rumble weird. I don’t miss it when I’m using KBM and it can aggravate my arthritis/pain. Definitely don’t need more difficulty pressing buttons.

Yo I don’t think I have ever heard one way or the other on SB about The Last Express.

It’s one of my favourite point and clicks. It has a lot of attention to historical details, and a fair amount of waiting around for stuff to happen which kind of makes me think of it as like a precursor to Shenmue in a way, if only a little bit.

I think the plot and acting are generally pretty good for a 90s game. The art noveau visual style is interesting, although it often looks a bit like one of those old educational games you’d find one the school computers.

The Last Express has a lovely atmosphere. But the countwdown always makes me anxious! I will manage to finish it, at some point in life.
