Quick Questions XIII: Answers Return

Except for swimming as a Zora. That shit’s the best.

Has there been a re-release yet that includes an essay? It’s not like I was expecting anything, but when I popped open the Resident Evil Origins Collection, I just got really sad when it was completely empty. There wasn’t even a 20th anniversary sticker or download code for items, etc.

Wouldn’t it be interesting if someone wrote something about RE’s origin, its place in history, its influences, its place within the game market circa 1995, the risk involved with developing the project, etc. How about an interview with Shinji Mikami? What about an oral history of the making of the game?

I understand this stuff is readily available online, but it’s odd to me that Capcom - or any developer for that matter - wouldn’t make the decision to package the game with a little historical context. Criterion thinks its important to do this in order to honor the best in film, and the same goes for CD re-releases. To just package the game and say “here guys, here’s that 60fps and 1080p you wanted n shit” just angers me for some reason. Most game players are illiterate knuckle-draggers but how can we change that perception if developers don’t treat their best work with the care and thoughtfulness those of us here show towards classic games?

I haven’t played Bloodborne since I beat it forever ago. I just bought The Old Hunters and I am paralyzed by the options. I want to get the most out of The Old Hunters in just one new playthrough… any tips?

The Old Hunters is balanced around late game characters, you will hit a brick wall at the first DLC boss unless you have a +9-ish weapon. I recommend just going through the game mostly normally with some build you haven’t tried and then seriously attempt the DLC when you’ve reached Mensis.

One fun option I’d recommended is to do a Strength build and get the Whirligig Saw (a.k.a. “pizza cutter”) which is one of the best weapons introduced in the DLC and is obtainable before fighting the first boss. You can look up where it is and go pick it up after beating Amelia, then beat the rest of the game with it. That’s what I did on my second DLC run.

yeah you can suicide run to like four or five weapons in there pretty early, if that’s interesting to you

any reason you can’t play it on the wii?

HAHA. ok push forward I’d say then. Nintendo is the worst.

Did you really lose your containers? I remember them being counted as equipment and staying with you.

Yeah, I think you’re really misremembering here, 2501.

From a FAQ of the original N64 version:

Saved:
Any new songs that you learned
Activated Owl Statues
Quest items such as the Bow, Bomb Bag, and Hookshot
Maps purchased from Tingle
Rupees that are in the Bank
Masks
Boss Remains
Dungeon Maps & Compasses
Great Fairy’s gifts
Any progress made in the Bombers’ Notebook

Lost
Ammunition (Arrows, Bombs, Bombchus, Deku Nuts, and Deku Sticks).
Bottled items.
People and events.
High scores.
Rupees in your pocket.
Opened chests (usually prizes are restocked, or else they contain five rupees).
Stray fairies.
Dungeons, including puzzles and the boss.
Small Keys and the Boss Key.

From what I can find nothing about the time reset mechanic was changed in 3ds version. They changed the save system, made Song of Double Time more versatile and the Bomber Notebook amongst other things but the items lost seem the same.

Now, I know one can get at a lot of original game soundtrack files for SNES and MegaDrive etc. roms and explode the tracks in editors to mute/solo but can this be done for Neo Geo bgm too?

Do you want an actual tracker/editor interface or to just mute individual channels?

You’re mostly out of luck for the former, as there is only one real tool (MVS Tracker), and it’s a pain to use, and futhermore can’t really be used for that purpose. That situation might change if DefleMask Tracker adds YM2610 support, but that could be a few years out, or never.

Just muting channels, on the other hand, is rather easier, although not necessarily simple. The ROMs can be loaded in M1 (Mac), bridgeM1 (Windows) or HOOT (Windows) like normal download/scan arcade emulators, and those should all support channel muting and WAV dumping. Not all games have track indexes, though, and very few have song length data.

Alternatively, if the songs have been logged to VGM files, you can just load the one you want to work with in a compatible VGM player - I believe all of the ones listed there support YM2610 VGMs. Most allow channel muting (and WAV writing), though some are clumsier at it than others.

Splendid, will give those things a spin

Cheers

people usually seem to bag on any aspects of Namco x Capcom or Project X Zone that aren’t related to their fanservice (except maybe the original music in NxC), but is there some specific list of complaints that can be leveled at them which more thoroughly illustrate why they fail to be enjoyable as games?

apparently NXC is just totally brain dead, but is that also always true of Project X Zone?

what’s the sbsensus re: gravity rush?
