Yo what’s the deal with square vs. octagonal vs. dodecahedronal gates?

Square is the standard in arcades and thus is the “right” one.

I use octogon ones in my sticks because I focus more on shooters and think only having a corner at diagonals is WEIRD.

Octagonal gates are a trap and every single person I know who’s bought one thinking “this will help my FG execution” went back to square gates before long.

This is the image that someone always trots out whenever this subject comes up and I can’t explain it, I’m not good at that kinda stuff, i just know it’s supposed to be a “slam dunk victory” for the square gate.

They are very cheap though so hey if they interest you why not give ‘em a shot

I am also a Semitsu baby.

Yeah speaking as someone who went Square->Octo->Square, doing quarter circles feels a little bit better on Octo at first, but the hard part is always nailing corners which square is way better for learning with.

Trust me, when you’re learning to do the dragon punch motion, or the diagonals in tekken, you’ll be really happy to have the square.

it seems that image is showing that the square gate gives equal range of motion to all 8 inputs where octogonal gates prioritize cardinal direction inputs

I’m bad at traditional fighting games and can never execute quarter circles correctly no matter what input method I’m using so I’ll just stick with smash bros like a scrub

I also use Seimitsu and it all keeps away people who want to borrow a stick it’s so great

I’m a Seimitsu dork as well, because when I made the Devo stick, they were the only clear top buttons I could get, so that was that. Then I liked them, so I stick with them.

I’m with Rudie on the octos for STG good times, but if your primary use is fightmans, the square gate is the way to go, yeah.

sounds like you haven’t played Cardinal Syn

Be thankful I didn’t suggest Criticom

I’m tired of sticks and buttons so I’m thinking about how to build a hitbox from capacitive pads

For that zero travel life

just play with an ipad app at that point imo

What say ya’ll Butts about those stickless sticks? You know, the ones that are Oops All Buttons

Hitboxes?

I say that Japan has started selling them at retail.

just play with a keyboard at that point imo

DISCOURSE PROTIP: There are two underscores in that Youtube URL which caused Discourse to think that part of it was actually meant to be formatting for italics and not actually part of the URL. I could add <>-brackets around the link to make it work but then the video wouldn’t be embedded properly. After looking around I discovered that if I replaced the underscores with their URL-codes instead I could get things working properly, in this case with “%5F

I think Hitboxes and products similar to them, are awesome.

I’m sure it would take a minimal amount of ingenuity to design a control board which has a switch for a mode which does not allow “impossible” directional inputs. If they haven’t done that already.

Yeah, back when I was hanging around the Cleveland FGC thing in like 08?09?, we had some dedicated hitbox people and it seemed pretty cool. Not great for my wrists, but I could see getting used to it.

dmauro has one and he seems to really dig it! it seems like it makes some games a little easier to play and some perhaps have more of a learning curve. but great way to make sure you’re not messing up an input.

I made my own hitbawx a few years ago and discovered they don’t work well for games that are strict about diagonals like alas 3S
So if I ever bother to learn a new title I will use one but I want no more actual buttons, just places to stick my fingers ergonomically arranged
Was looking into using piezo switches today, could do what I need

And lockouts of simultaneous directionals are already in a bunch of PCBs now to keep them tourney legal, yeah
