Puzzles (The Physically-based IRL kind)

I just solved a 2x2 Rubik’s Cube completely unassisted. Spent the last week or two picking at it here and there. Really proud of myself and now I want to get a regular 3x3 cube.

We’ve also got some of those wood puzzle box things where you have a bunch of weird shaped blocks and you have to figure out how to fit them into the shape of a cube or fit them into a wooden box. Those are fun.

What are your favorite IRL puzzles?

i like 3x3 slide puzzles because they are easily solvable from any position while still requiring brain power

Did not know tsumego was a thing! Makes sense though. Use Go to make some tough puzzles to solve. I’ll have to check it out.

The nephews got a few different metal ring interlocking puzzles for Christmas but I have not fiddled enough to figure out you’re supposed to get them separated.

Puzzles?? We talkin’ puzzles now?? As if my life wasn’t puzzling enough I gotta deal with some nerd’s brain torture devices now too, I don’t think so, buddy

Just kidding, but at first I thought the last physical puzzle I played with was one of those put the square peg in the square hole type of things. Then I remembered that I used to love slide puzzles as an older kid (can totally remember getting one at a MacDonald’s) - without ever figuring out or looking up the method of how you’re supposed to solve those. I really want to do that sometime because the number of porn games that incorporate slide puzzles is ridiculous. That sort of thing must be really simple to code in every possible engine, or have example code in every engine.

OMG the nephews have a regular 3x3 cube in a very heavily unsolved state I’m a real cubin’ maniac now.

i have often thought about jigsaw puzzles as the ultimate form of leisure, because they are accomplished in a state where you are so idle that you choose to do an activity that is pointless, slow, and frustrating

I’ve been messing with a 3x3 because I want to eventually try a 2x2x2x2. I vaguely remember some algorithms a blessing, really, but I figure it would be more satisfying to treat it like dorodango. I have been considering getting a 2x2 for solving.

Last night I was scrambling my lament configuration in the dark, tracking a corner(orange, white, green) and an edge(blue, yellow). I kind of hate seeing solved cubes sitting around, scrambling is the best part

I like to pretend that people never leave they just change their handle.

I got one of these fellers on my computer desk that I picked up on clearance discount some years back. I’ve never actually taken it apart and tried to solve it, I just like how it looks.

I don’t even get what that’s supposed to look like when it’s solved. Or it’s it in the solved state right now? What’s the name of this so I can look it up?

That is solved, when unsolved it is a bunch of irregularly shaped wooden pieces that do not seem like they would add up to this.

A quick googling tells me it is named the Pure Genius Acorn.

I engage in a shameful level of jigsaw puzzle collecting. I now have opinions about which brands are better than others, what makes a good jigsaw puzzle. It’s a good activity to do while listening to podcasts, but also I want my time back.
