so i recently got a rival schools issue of gamest ex, full of delicious rival schools lore. of course, it is all in japanese, so i also commisioned a friend on tumblr to translate some bits of it. and, because a thread will make for convenient reading than a bunch of images and a textfile, here those bits are~
red text: TAIYO ACADEMY UNIFORMS
top left: Boys’ Winter Uniform
The base design is the most typical style of high school uniform there is. The emblem on the collar is its defining feature. The choice of shoes is up to the individual student. Kyosuke’s prized white gakuran is thought to be a uniquely made-to-order item.
top right: Girls’ Winter Uniform
Essentially, it’s the same as the summer uniform, but with a blazer layered over it. As with the summer version, socks and shoes are up to the student. If someone wore knee-socks with a uniform like this, it could put their male co-eds at risk of a heart attack.
Bottom left: Boys’ Summer Uniform
There’s no uniform policy on shirts, so any open-necked dress shirt or polo is considered acceptable. Having so much of the uniform be customizable makes you feel like your fashion sense is being tested.
Bottom right: Girls’ Summer Uniform
The ribbon on the collar is this summer uniform’s defining accent. It suits cute girls so well that it’s a crime! The bag, shoes, and socks are all up to the individual student’s taste.
large orange text in background: SEVEN WONDERS
red text: Taiyo High
paragraph on top of page: The Seven Wonders! Almost every school has their own urban legends that circulate among the students, and Taiyo High is no exception! Why the number is always seven is in itself a mystery, but anyway, let’s take a look!
#1: Shrieks of Terror! The Headless Jizo Statue!?
In the mountain behind Taiyo High, there’s a shrine with a small altar. If some unlucky person looks at it at midnight, the head of the Jizo statue will disappear, and they’ll die within a year! (In truth, the statue’s head was missing as long as anyone can remember.) It’s become a popular spot for tests of courage during summer break, and if you aren’t careful, it’s possible to run into a big crowd…
comic panel:
male student: The head!
female student: Pfft… (It didn’t have one in the first place.)
#2: A Curse Upon the Victor!?
For some reason, on years where the school wins the annual Tai-P Showdown, college acceptance rates plummet! After becoming the heroes of Tai-P, the victorious students’ recommendation letters are rejected one after another, and they’re doomed to become ronins! (This one is actually true. It’s probably just because everyone’s works themselves into a fever during the event, right? Another possible explanation is that they’re out of good luck after using it all on Tai-P.)
#3: Mystery of the School Cafeteria!? Afternoon Under Attack
During their afternoon lessons, students who pick the “Side Dish of the Day” (a popular menu item at school lunch) will always get called on by the teacher during class! Because of that, you may think it’s best to avoid picking the side dish, but it just so happens that it’s a really good value and tastes really delicious! Should you live with the terror of getting called on, or have a beautifully carefree afternoon…
#4: A Wandering Ghost Student!?
The library, the girls’ gym changing room, the area behind the clubrooms, the male swim team’s changing room, the student government meeting room… These are all places where the spirit of a long-dead student who committed suicide is said to appear!! Although it’s not unusual for a high school to have its share of ghost stories, this one doesn’t follow the spirit… rather, follow the example of most, since there are reported sightings in countless places throughout the school.
subtitle: A foreigner’s ghost in the classroom!? Actually, this is just Boman.
#5: Imminent Destruction! The Mystery of the Tai-P Showdown!?
comic panel: What happened to all the attention she gave me back then…?
kanji in comic panel: ICY
It’s said that couples who start seeing each other during the Tai-P competition never last until graduation! It’s a strange jinx for sure, but could it be that it’s just a rumor started by jealous singles!? However, couples getting together in the heated frenzy of the Tai-P Showdown often come to their senses later, so this legend could have some some scientific (?) backing.
#6: The Obligatory Graveyard Legend
Apparently, long, long ago, the area beneath the clubrooms used by many of the student clubs was once a cemetery! (Is that why the grounds are so large!?)
Since the beginning of history, if there’s a building put up over a large area, theories will spring up that it used to be a gravesite. Maybe the reason it’s under the clubhouse in Taiyo High’s case is because students wanted to spice up their lonely afterschool time!?
subtitle: You hear a lot of rumors about school buildings being built on top of graveyards. The picture has nothing to do with this, but it’s a nice view of the mountain behind the school.
#7: An Elderly Mystery! Minamoto-San is 100 Years Old!?
The school janitor, Minamoto, might actually be over 100! (He looks old, but he’s actually only 48.) The janitor, who is quite popular (?) with the students, can always be seen sipping tea while munching on rice crackers, which gives off an impression that he’s behind the times by almost half a century. That certainly explains this rumor…
