crows around here have a lot of character but maybe five years ago i learned that what everyone says is crowd around here is actually ravens

didn’t change much but it’s cooler to talk about ravens so it pleased me

you can tell them apart up close because crows are average bird size and ravens are fuckin six foot tall and full of muscle. but also from a distance raven calls are more of a “gwuonk” sound than a “caw”

according to wiki our crows (native to north + west au) are about the same size as our ravens (south + east) though maybe the ravens have a greater wingspan. they go “ä! ä… äää……” though

learning about how to price a videogame. thankfully, there are many informative articles!

ok so it’s petty straightforward then. just divide the amount of money you’re going to make by the number of units you’re going to sell

when you think about it, an honorable mention is like a nomination for a nomination. that’s two nominations. and there’s about twice as much game now as there was in the igf demo, so… two times two… you do the math…

more importantly, the price of flight team needs your help:

what element is a gun
  • wind elemental
  • fire elemental

if it was an option, earth elemental. lead is basically heavy dirt

They’re fire arms.

i thought it was bullshit that swords were air and wands were fire but i guess a gun is a sword wand so i see your trouble

I am a bad friend and just saw this.

I’d play this game.

while kali has been busy finishing crooked mile my strategy for placeholder sprites has largely been google searching the enemy concept and taking a random image and dropping it in game without bothering to scale it at all and sometimes the result in engine makes me laugh my ass off

Reflecting on our award-likes (indiecade nomination & igf honorable mention), while I’m really grateful the judges saw something in our buggy incomplete demo build, I feel like it would be so helpful just to know something about what they saw in it. It was immensely helpful and gratifying to see cohost posts from two judges mentioning our game and what stood out to them about it and I just wish that these formal nominations had come with an explanation from the panel on what they got out of our game. In general it’s strange to me that these things usually just produce a big list of games and their storefront descriptions instead of providing any context on why they were worth highlighting.

Game awards categories are already inherently a bit awkward since something like excellent visuals could be style or technique or animation or something else entirely, just looking through the other nominations I wish I had some context on what aspect of those broad categories was special for each game. It remains a mystery to me why we were chosen in both cases for a design award, out of all the categories, we sure do have a lot of it but especially given how much balance and refining we have left to do, it’s hard to say that what’s there is the good part of the game… Well, I think or maybe just hope that what we did show off was interesting at least. Maybe if you just put enough strangely named mechanics in your game people will want to stand back and watch you cook, assume you know what you’re doing and that the result won’t be a mess.

it’s the two year anniversary of us releasing the game jam version. i don’t really know what to say about that but it feels like something i should comment on anyway!

only really in the last couple weeks did we get back into playtesting and discover that at some point between IGF and now the game became Fun, ‘a real videogame’ despite all the bugs and unfinished bits. the obvious lesson here is that when you’re in the Stuff Genre and you can’t find the fun, just keep digging at the bottom of the hole and you’ll eventually strike gold! or a sewer line! either way your problems will solve themselves

i thought i’d be more distressed about having put this amount of time into something that was supposed to take a few months but now i’m more afraid of being done with it lol

well, look forward to the game probably coming out before the end of the year! probably! we’ll have some kind of demo at nextfest in june but god knows what will be in it
