PRICE OF FLIGHT (Now with Demo!)

i tried to use reshade to do some kind of composite blending of adjacent pixels - i’m really curious how the dithering might look under those conditions - but i couldn’t figure it out.

i’ve never used that program but if it was an issue getting any shader to work then i blame Edge

Ah what a wonderful demo. Too short! far too short. i need more.

you’ll remember us after you get world famous right?

i’m glad that nextfest went well! the Numbers are small but everyone we’ve seen talk about/play this (including on the wider internet) has been effusive, so that’s been cool

i’ll be interested to see what people make of the full game… we did what we could to make the demo set the right expectations, but it ends before the obtuse kawazu bullshit really kicks in, or the barest suggestion of that cursed word, “roguelite.” hopefully that won’t stop it from finding whatever its audience is. if i just keep adding more dialogue branches no one can be mad at me

“i need to work your love style into the seagull option in the old lady event” - statements dreamed up by the utterly deranged

gdc went well, im letting the axe claim most of my rambling about it but here’s a pic of me karate chopping the podium as a display of dominance

my technique is so perfect you can’t even tell i split it in half

very funny to me that trying to explain our game to people has made us commit harder to making it unexplainable. also very exciting. im just happy every time our “fuck around → find out” cycle cycles back to fucking around. i will never learn

fixed the game crashing when you drink soup while dehydrated

hey how is rpg maker? i keep thinking of making an RPG but it might be easier to use an RPG maker instead of doing it all from scratch if you know what i mean

if you want to make exactly the kind of RPG a particular version is built to make then its great but dont use MV its got some really rough lacking features esp in the map layer management department imo

if you want to do anything even slightly outside of what a given version wants things to look like by default i have become radicalized to the position of “maybe making it in another engine isnt so bad actually” if you want to do something even a little outside the engine expectation. or perhaps even more importantly if you do it in one of the versions built on ruby js etc under no circumstances should you ever use community plugins especially from Certain Popular Individuals save yourself run away do not let them put their code in your game

also for real MVs map editor is the worst of any version use any other version

ok noted. I was gonna do it in Love2D because I’m all about making Famicom games that never existed and have a pixel accurate setup for displaying graphics. But i’m also like “do I want to make all those mechanics myself” but also since I’m about making fake famicom games they have to have A Look to them,

i think it’s the kind of thing where i grew up using it and so i have familiarity and patience with its idiosyncracies. when i described our game as rpgmaker demoscene i meant it, because anything not recognizably rpgmaker in the game was like twice as hard to make as it should’ve been. even that ten second platformer segment from the demo took days of work. obviously we weren’t expecting to be working on this for over 3 years lol

“rpg maker game” is sort of a genre separate from “rpg” in a way. every version of the engine is its own subgenre, because everyone (mostly kids) comes into it with their own dream game idea but they all get filtered through the limitations of the editor and engine and prepackaged/community assets into something that shares a lot of characteristics. i think that’s compelling but i gather it’s an acquired taste. a lot of why i got as into it as i did as a kid was the social context around it and a lot of that has disappeared or become unrecognizable to me, so idk. i can’t name any modern equivalent to seeing the sprite for Fighter01 appear as different characters across a bunch of games like he’s a famous actor, or getting hit by a wave of emotions because someone decided to pull on your mental associations with Theme01, or laughing because you’ve encountered yet another rpg maker game with a minecart puzzle. most of those games are lost media now. continuing to use the software feels strange–it’s full of ghosts. you google your questions and find ancient hypercam youtube videos about someone’s oc, “dilbert the ninja catgirl.” spiritually unsettling but still more human than unity support forums? i guess that keeps me going

re: what you’re describing, low-res games require a lot of out of the box tweaking to get working in a way that doesn’t feel like a flash game using sprite rips. unless you’re using 2k or 2k3, in which case you’re giving up on ever extending the engine, and either making your game windows only with a bundled patch for a windows bug, or you’re messing with “easyrpg” and god help you

in my mind rpg maker is good for visual novels (better than renpy imo), yume nikki fangames, and channeling the id through deliberately trying to make an “rpg maker game” (e.g. the stuff thecatamites was doing with it)

apparently you can use condiments or religion to clone dogs. and we just have to accept that.

daily affirmations

i watched a baby owl get fed and pet so that was chill. i forgot to take a picture of the poster depicting north and south korea as owls so you’ll have to take my word that the owl center in houston mn has that. for some reason

we continue to bring the game to events. this is the first one since nextfest and im told our 2 minute personality quiz is a major filter for people sitting down to play. i don’t wanna be like “the attention economy is in SHAMBLES” but RPGs are really hard to demo, damn. from contentdeleted: “we might be the only people there without a publisher.” you know, at an open source expo. lol

i am not there because i have been having a #MoldSummer. i was hopping around the country for like a month, and while i still can’t go home i’ve finally gotten some routine back. it’s part of why progress has been so slow, but Bee also commented that i appear to work on the game “more than full-time” so… what is the truth

it’s been a tough year for everyone, i think. at some point i’ll have to rewrite some jokes which have become a little too topical recently. and maybe stop procrastinating on getting a new passport. but as i finished writing that sentence my gf walked into the room and told me to come hang out so things can’t be that bad. ok ok im going

Event is going great! Day 3 and @Khan and I are relaxed and enjoying the show

Honestly one of the best events we’ve been to

-and that’s just what I managed to type this morning as we were setting up.
@Khan and I have so much more to say about the event but going to these in person showcases continues to energize us, both from watching people play and LOVE the game, and inevitably meeting and hanging out with other incredibly cool indie devs
Videogames are so back

the plugin we’ve been using for text has space for 64 fonts, which seemed like an absurd amount when we added it

we ran out of font space today
