it doesn’t really mean anything but a few weeks ago (more like 2 months now because i forgot to actually hit post on this) with the bump from cohost’s artist alley we passed 1k wishlists on that platform which does take 30% of profits in exchange for emailing you weekly about… well about this shit

this doesn’t do a good job of representing what stage we’re at in the game’s development, most of the work gets tracked in a couple cards with a hundred subtasks each, but it does in many ways reflect the mental state of the people making it

did some research today. it’s like when sonic team comped a trip to las vegas for casino night zone. but for looking at birds
as bart simpson would say, the international eagle center is truly a land of contrasts
the first floor lets you hang out with bald eagles and employees who are either genuinely psyched to talk about and handle them or very experienced at faking it. as i understand it the animal is deadly, hyper-territorial, and kind of dumb. like, the kind of dumb where they’ll try to feed other birds to their chicks, but if the chicks don’t eat them they’ll think they’re their own kids. honestly kind of cute that with two on opposite sides of the room they had to announce their territory to each other every five minutes.
the second floor is this:
semiotics would love this place, the signifier literally held captive beneath the signified. gonna do my best not to overstep my bounds as a white girl but i can safely say ive seen more sincere land acknowledgments than the one sitting next to the uncritically presented collection of cop badges and mint in-box american eagle action figure. i guess there’s something for everybody, especially at the clothing section of the gift shop if you want to become the living embodiment of “i’ll help you pack.” cooperation of prairie island or no i have some good guesses why i only saw white people visiting or working there. feels weird to condemn a bird museum for not being more overtly critical of american fascism but, well, this is the thread im posting in i guess
the plaque outside on the mississippi river front is… at least better enough to induce whiplash
i always imagined the mississippi being wider but it’s okay i guess. the place next door that promises “the best pizza in the driftless” is also just okay, but “the driftless” sounds like a caves of qud region which is cool enough that i forgive it. did you know that you can tell whether an eagle fishes by it wearing pants? i don’t know how to end this post.

i got to hang out near a bald eagle at a nature preserve once and she was not a dignified creature at all lol, she was a big whiny baby. really cute tho and FUCKING LARGE you really dont get how hueg those birds are until you seem them in person
There were ravens at the same preserve, and fuck holy shit even more so lol ravens are fucking gigantic

the game is not complete. however, you can now complete the game. a koan
we just had to fix the game softlocking on the final dungeon, and then fix it softlocking on the final boss, and then add text that indicates where the ending would go. kali two-shot the final boss even after i gave it the max hp our ui would allow, so i may need to rethink some things. this is just what happens when you allow a wrestler to have a gun… and two spears. he found them in the garbage.
i would be tired too if i had to carry three weapons in my mouth all the time
it’s actually good and normal for a playthrough of a run-based game to take six to eight hours, and not something that blindsided us after it was too late to change. “cut the sokoban segment! cut the baseball episode!” you cry, but i will not. back in my day you’d spend three days on a nethack playthrough before falling into a pit and dying instantly. we must return to the old ways

im too sick to make it but im told it’s going well and there are a couple of interesting games there. also vtubers, somehow, with teleconferencing equipment and attendants. we’re living in the future.
as usual with these things it feels like the best case scenario is that a couple dozen people learn we exist and idk how anyone makes a living out of that. i guess for the most part they don’t! maybe that’s not news. i’m not in it for the money but idk how people do this stuff without it. a bathroom in the condo upstairs flooded a few days ago and we have to tear out the drywall and fight with their landlord to get their insurance info. idk that just feels related somehow
very difficult for me to gauge sincere interest but at least people think we’re funny. i had a good time writing deranged news headlines to scroll by on the new title screen, even if it made me feel like i was turning into an onion. the game crashes less than it used to. there’s a lot of unfinished content but players aren’t good enough to see most of it-- that’s how you know we’re an authentic Retro Game. only for true rpg murderheads
we’re submitting to igf again this year for kicks but most of the attention from the honorable mention came out of a couple of judges posting about us on cohost (as far as we can tell) and that website will close before submissions do. kinda bleak. is it time to make a… press kit? do games press sites still exist in a way that matters? it seems like that vacuum’s been filled by publishers and streamers and streamer-publishers and, idk, nebulous word of mouth on subreddits and discord servers. stuff just gets popular and it’s always a mystery to me where that happened.

im really glad we did this. theres some really cool other devs - some are even oakland devs and just didnt know about the meetups we have going on! (ill post in games you played thread after this weekend about the games that bodily need to be looked at) theres obviously plenty of lame tacky shit too (ill bitch about that in a different thread also…)
but its been really gratifying to see cool stuff, to see other devs genuinely gush and get excited about our design… lots of con goers are loving it too! obviously a lot of folks glom onto the funny writing and the graphics and the premise but a lot of them do genuinely get into the mechanics and eager to sink their teeth into the full thing! some folks have even jumped into the full game instead of just the demo and that feels really gratifying. genuinely this has been a heartening experience for my relationship to video games and for how people feel about ours
also today we ran into some students who had played our game at our first public demo down at uc santa cruz! i recognized them as they were talking among themselves “isnt this that game we played” as the dudes who played all the way into winter crowded around our steam deck and would have made it to the boss if they hadnt crashed. that felt really awesome honestly very heartwarming. they were surprised i recognized them but how could i forget the first strangers to ever fall into deep love with our weird game. anyway got their emails
