physics based sports sims

putting this in GO just cuz i wanted to note this trend, but don’t have anything specific to say other than that I think it’s cool

hockey - Puck
“Control every move, pass, and shot with realistic puck physics, dynamic player movement, and thrilling gameplay.”

skateboarding - Session Skate Sim
"With its unique twin-stick control system, transfer weight on the board to pull off tricks as if you were skating in the real world. "

sailing - Hydrofoil Generation
“Take control of the course, the sails trim and, most important , the foils. Keep your boat flying as high as possible to maximize speed but not so high to risk coming down with a splash or worse, as capsizing is just around the corner.”

driving - BeamNG.drive
“A dynamic soft-body physics vehicle simulator capable of doing just about anything.”

SKATE’s controls felt a lot like skateboarding to me

the fight of the sumo hoppers

you control the angle and the extension of your uh leg and whoever’s head touches the ground first loses

oh also i played the demo of this and i think it fits the bill:

climbing game where you pick/plan your own route, individual control of arms and legs, and there aren’t explicit hand holds (well there are in the practice climbing gym but not on the mountain) – it all falls out of the geometry of the rock you’re climbing and a procedural animation system.

This looks like a more exhilarating Jusant.

yeah i found the demo to feel more like climbing than jusant – the procedural animation system will make your arm/leg shake when it’s load bearing but on a bad hold and that’s pretty terrifying

jusant had less robust climbing but it did have a lot of swinging which was pretty fun. but yeah felt more level design-y too while this is trying to make it feel natural and open

I’m still waiting for a good American football version of the physics based sim

i think you’d have to involve stuff like foot planting mechanics, arm controls for catching /throwing, etc. but I’m not really sure

SB favorite Toribash definitely falls into this category.

American football would be tough, depending on the depth of the simulation, just because having 22 models all in motion at the same time would be pretty intensive. Maybe if you did it in slo-mo/RTP…

ETA:

I also think it’s arguable that Sensible World of Soccer could fall into this category given how it handles ball control.

I’ve always thought there should be a racing game with a fully simulated engine. Not just “car go forward” programming but fully simulated fluid physics for the fuel.

i dunno if it counts if the Real Life version is also using an xbox controller but

Uncrashed : FPV Drone Simulator
"Simulate your own FPV drone with settings based on real values and you will have the same feeling as a real flight without the risk of breaking your drone ! "

It’s not among my favorite Justin Smith games anymore (Freeways is truly brilliant and The Legend of Bear-Truck Trucker is very fun) but it’s still interesting. It’s sort of a parody of Olympics games with 80 half-assed sports but retains its own internal humor.
