I never realized that bonzo was a reference to buddhist clergy. Learn something new every day.
gomola speed is one of my favorite pc engine games tbh. a left field classic. I love that there’s no timer
Putting the word “turbo” in the title of a late 80s jrpg remake is a videogame thing I think about a lot
I thought those games were your typical bad dragon quest clone until I saw this guy’s resume and since then ive been dying to play one.
the momotaro games aren’t normal rpgs, but some kind of boardgame thing. like those compile msx games i can’t remember the name of. i think trains also become a big deal later in the series too?
Well there are the Momotarou Dentetsu games which are train board games, and there are the Momotarou Densetsu games which are Dragon Quest style JRPGs.
Who could possibly be confused by that.
I gave Jigoku Meguri and the Momotarou platformer, which I would have skipped over for being a momotarou, a try. Like minty said just a bad wonderboy platformer. I also got quickly frustrated with Meguri.
But my main focus while on the train to meet an SBer!!! Was two shooters at random, on mute, on my anbernic.
First was Violent Soldier which has nothing to do with the Star Soldier series. It’s a horizontal shooter, slow paced. Which on a system with Darius, Gradius, and R-Type you gotta bring something. The main gimmick here is your options destroy everything above and below your ship. Your hitbox also seems to be closer to modern standards. But your default movement is so slow and pea shooter feels so weak. Your charge shot is just a half-second circle around your ship. You need to be prepared to use it.
The second is Psycho Chaser which is tate where you’re like a robot dude and you gotta shoot all the generic things. You are theoritically walking around and can cycle through 4 different weapons for different situations. As the PC Engine only has two action buttons, this regulates one button to cycling through the weapons. You again start each life too slow and too weak. I had a bit more fun finally playing in a save-stateable way and moving slowly through the first 4 stages with a bit more power.
Both games inspired “Euroshmup” in me and I created a category on the rank list that they go in.
Lmao
i’d like to take a moment to let people know about an album from 2003 that i nabbed as a teenager.
https://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Sword_of_Justice/The_Elegy_of_Battle/227053
it’s one of those really awesome “japanese dude does metal covers of game songs” albums, and all but two tracks are pc-engine songs. valis, ys, even a really deep cut in maniac pro wrestling are on here. anyways, finding this album, even on youtube, is impossible these days. maybe do some soul searching and try to seek it out somewhere. maybe pirate the album by downloading it off of a peer-to-peer network. wink wink.
With Cyber Cross Busou Keiji and Cross Wiber Cyber Combat who would possibly be confused? When they are also both Tokusatsu flavored platformers.
I played one yesterday on the train and have been seconding guessing which all morning.
VIDEO GAME THING I’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT ALMOST MY ENTIRE LIFE: JB HAROLD MURDER CLUB, A GAME I NEVER BEAT UNTIL TONIGHT
VIDEO GAME THING I LEARNED TODAY: IT’S ABOUT AN ACTUAL MURDER CLUB, ARE YOU KIDDING ME, I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST SOME QUIRKY JAPANESE NAME, LIKE THEY WERE INVITING PLAYERS TO JOIN JB’S MURDER (SOLVING) CLUB, THIS IS BLOWING MY MIND
VIDEO GAME I’LL SOON HOLD THE #1 SPEEDRUN WORLD RECORD FOR: BATMAN FOR ZX SPECTRUM REMAKE FOR WINDOWS COMPUTER
OH YEAH SECOND VIDEO GAME I’LL SOON HOLD THE #1 SPEEDRUN WORLD RECORD FOR: JB HAROLD MURDER CLUB, A GAME I ONCE LOVED BUT NOW HATE SO MUCH I THINK THE TURBOGRAFX DESERVED TO FAIL AND I WISH I COULD PISS ON IT STRAIGHT FROM MY BALLS YEAH THIS IS A BIT MUCH BUT THAT’S JUST HOW I’M FEELING OK MAYBE I’LL ELABORATE LATER BUT THIS IS JUST HOW I’M FEELING!!
Sol Bianca “oh good Masaya” I exclaimed. The publishers that supported the PC Engine really supported the PC Engine. Did you know there used to be a Masaya Game store in Eastern Tokyo? It had “Legendary” status. There were Game Developers You Could Name that shed actual tears at the closing ceremony. Was it related to the game developer, probably not!
Sol Bianca drops you into a Dragon Quest (with sci-fi stuff) with FIVE party members. And believe me you gotta equip the 5 women of various ages and find out their likes and dislikes between nuchucks or A Real Gun. It has ammo.
The nice thing is battles were automated. Each level up for each girl gave me the chance to raise one stat. I sure didn’t know what any of them meant especially the ones in English characters.
Every problem with the game was modern quality of life stuff. Having to blindly buy items for 5 girls of unknown class distinction and putting Equip and move item in separate menu trees. The stats for everything being kept in menus and strategy guides. Just a lot of little fussying. I haven’t mentioned in 5 posts I don’t like Dragon Quest.
Avenger you know what I do like supposedly? Shooters. This is just dang average one. But it’s on CD. So it have a very long intro with extremely traced from Macross shots. I laughed out loud upon seeing the actual ship because it looked like a 13 year old designed it. A nerdy 13 year old. I think I also had a dialog choice that affected things for stage 2 but I buzzed through it. It is a helicopter based shooter with the typical tilt feature and I thought of all the helicopter shooters I had played in my life. This is what we in Japan call “tuna sashimi.” Or Natsukashii as you Americans know it.
You have 4 hits till you are dead and infinite continues from stage start. Your stage start arsenal is far too weak for Stage 2. Your sprite is very big against the boss’s bullets, or the enemies coming straight behind you. After 5 continues I was absolutely done.
Death Bringer
Upon seeing this font I started apologizing and saying I didn’t know I didn’t know. I should know to just avoid Native Japanese Dungeon Crawlers.
It’s kind of messed up how many games Masaya shoveled onto the PC Engine without making a good one. I mean maybe they do eventually, but for now they are reliably bad at what they do.
This is the most savage statement I’ve ever read about a game developer and I’m hollering in my seat
Naxat Stadium
Finally a good simple sports game. We’ve long suffered in this field. It is not complicated and janky as you control all position at the same time but it is fun to hit the ball and move your little guys around. You can have a pop-fly slam a shortstop in the nuts! Small and charming and what I needed at the end of tonight’s adventure.
Woah, this is actually made by Sting.
excuse me, there are two Cho Aniki games on the system
Those don’t start coming until 1992! Masaya made 26 games for the PC Engine before that!
you can’t get good at making omelettes without breaking a ton of eggs and making shitty ones
Both Mooks list publisher and not developer and while thar definitely makes sense for PC Engine days, is not entirely useful for tracking lineage as we go through this system.
masaya did more pc engine games, but it seems like they put their best stuff on mega drive. they’ve got a couple of good games coming up that aren’t cho aniki though
