Patches 🕸️🕷

This post by Rudie

reminded me that I’ve thought a thread to show off patches might be a fun idea. As I mentioned in the Opus Magnum thread in 2017, I didn’t intend to start collecting patches but after acquiring three in rapid succession within the space of about a month, I’ve found myself looking out for them ever since.

The three pictured below are

  • Opus Magnum (sent to players who beat the game in Early Access and requested it)
  • Hi Fructose (sent to subscribers of the magazine)
  • Deep Dark Fears (sent to people who preordered a book)

This might be my favorite patch in my collection. When my mother was clearing out old clutter, she gave me a bag of things from when I was in the Boy Scouts program. This also ended up in that bag.

Pic 'n Save was my favorite store to go to as a kid because it was the only place where I could ask for a toy and actually get one. (Things were very cheap there.) The best thing I ever got there was this Starriors toy. I’ve considered tracking down another one as an adult but they are kind of pricey and do I really need another thing that just sits on a shelf? (No.)

The Opus one rules. I have two more Zachtronics ones to see onto my vest and I will have a set of five, but the Opus one was first.

Here are the patches that I acquired during the SB meetup trip last month.

And these two are from the library when I was a kid. I like the way they drew the person holding a book.

Pic’n’Save during the Halloween season was also rad as a kid because they always had so much cool nonsense. The last time I went to one was c. 2000 and they still had Biker Mice from Mars and Ocarina of Time action figures, it was rad. Also, if you spent more than a few minutes in there you always left reeking of potpourri. It was like if a KMart fused with a Michael’s but without the Little Caesar’s.

Can we open this thread up for pins/buttons too

I guess we can let that slide, if you think we’re ready for that kind of abandon here at SB. What will come next? A post about quantity surveying?

Anyway, here are a few more of my patches:

The TMBG patch is from a fundraiser they did during pandemic isolation, for some touring musicians who were suddenly no longer touring.

I don’t remember where I got the cockroach one.

I can’t figure out what to put all my patches on. I guess a vest or a jacket? I’ve got the same issue with pins. Big collection, no idea how to display them really.

My current project is just a Levi’s black denim jacket, which was like 50 bucks or so.

I have a vinyl jacket that’s got a tear in the back. Are there like stick on patches for that sort of thing? Like a repair and a cool patch at the same time?

these are the most decorative patches i’ve seen but maybe you could use a heavyweight vinyl sticker?
