I am going to have to do this because I when I had it downloaded I didn’t complete it and then I deleted it to make some space and then didn’t re-download it before they snatched it away from us.
I should probably do this today in case this doesn’t work for some reason in the future.
On one hand, the ARG elements didn’t stop the community from figuring out the secret right away, and they leave players wandering around without a clue. On the other hand, that kind of mystery and insanity that it drills into your mind is one of the best things about it.
Silent Hills would have been great, sure, but I also couldn’t imagine it having the same impact P.T. did. It would have to be many hours long, with a story that can be easily parsed. IIRC there’s an interview with Kojima where he said that Silent Hills would have combat and wouldn’t be first-person. And as much as I like the series, there’s something regressive there.
I don’t think we ever got a good look at Lisa’s ghost when we played in the yurt. Apparently, it can show up in several places. I think we got a glimpse out a window at one point, and we talked about a hypothetical appearance on a balcony.
Frequently there’s a radio playing in the background with creepy news stories and etc. At some point it starts reading out a series of numbers, and of course you’re like oh, these will probably be important for a puzzle or something, so you try to memorize them or write them down. The numbers do fuck all.
As for spiking the controller, it was just from a jump scare, but I’ve never had one of those work on me in a videogame to that extent. It’s a testament to the atmosphere building.
I think the smartest mechanical breakthrough they have is making your main interaction paying close attention. The button press zooms in, the repeating world and puzzle structure forces you to look deeper, all fighting against the protective withdrawal a player/viewer engages in to guard against horror and jump scares. And then they turn the crank.
Yes! Back when I was a smart person I read some essay about how the instinct to look away was key to the experience of watching a horror movie. This flips that on its head by being all about looking.
I wonder why the Creator of “Unreal PT” removed the download link so soon after posting it and has never posted it again. That remake was missing a few things, but it was pretty faithful. Worth seeking out if you have no other way of trying the game. I’m sure it can be found somewhere.
The other night, I tried the P.T. remake in Dreams. Obviously that version is missing even more than Unreal PT, but I was impressed at how much is there. The red part is nice and hazy.
Speaking of unavailable things, will Devotion ever reappear? I still want to play that.
