I’ve been doing larval core farming to get myself a better multi tool. What you do is you find an “abandoned building” (or was it “structure”, I don’t recall). Around it will be four nests of whispering eggs, with 7 of them in each nest. Not all of them contain larval cores, so that’s 5 per nest, all in all 20 eggs. Wanna know what they’re worth? 95,000 credits a piece. So that’s almost 2 millions.
Could it really be that easy though? Well, funny that you ask! Because when you destroy a whispering egg a swarm of biological horror creatures burrows out of the ground. And they hit hard. Talking about three hits to kill you, if you’re unlucky.
But here’s what you do. You destroy the whispering egg, quickly pick up the larval core, monsters will already have surrounded you but you’re still safe because they, for some reason, don’t attack right away. You’ve got a few seconds. And you use those to jetpack on top of the abandoned building. There you stand and wait for one minute until the swarm has “subsided” again. Don’t bother killing the monsters, that’s just a waste of ammo.
Rinse and repeat.
To destroy all 28 eggs probably will take you 45 minutes to an hour, if there are storms on your planet or it’s super toxic/radioactive. So that’s still a million in half an hour. That’s not bad for something you can do from the moment you start the game!
I hope that there are better venues for making money later on though. Because it is tedious. (like most things in this game, still)
Oh yeah, another good way to make bank early on is to buy the scanner upgrade (s) (stands for S-Rank) and install it on your multi tool. This will raise the credits you get for scanning flora and fauna by several thousand percent. That means that you get 20,000 units for plants and 80,000 for animals you scan. And the scanner upgrades stack, so I don’t even know what you get if you have two s-rank upgrades installed, or even more…
man since my inventory was so limited i just started selling everything i didn’t seem to need. i sold some acid i found in freighter wreckage and that stuff got me over a million pretty quick.
There was also an economic exploit that let you get tens of millions really quickly by crafting cryopumps, but it requires a 1.5+ million buy in for the crafting components, so you can’t exactly do that from minute 1. Not sure if they patched it already.
Re: streaming. I don’t do regular streams or anything, but if any of y’all see me playing on Steam and want to watch, just request a “watch game” from me, it’s cool.
this game runs like garbage on my notebook but i’m enjoying it, still. i like the busy-work. agree with all the complaints about UI / design stuff though. really want to get a freighter soon and see how that goes
thanks for the tip; got some 4 million units doing this~!!
Didn’t even know you could do that! That’s definitely cool. If I had known that earlier I would have watched Felix play LaMulana 2
I’m uploading the first hour of my NMSN experience to YouTube right now. It will be a few hours until I’ll post a link though because I need to sleep badly
There’s a machine in every space station that lets you do it for money once. You can also find these on planets, but then typically they cost resources to repair them.
I’ve been springing for the high capacity slots since they hold double, but there might be a point when going to another space station is less hassle than the extra money it costs.
Yeah, you find Drop Pods on the planets and those have the repairable upgrades. I haven’t found them prohibitively expensive to repair or anything, I think the materials needed may change by solar system but the repair mats needed stay the same for each drop pod in the same system. Like my current one requires 55 ionized cobalt, 45 sodium carbide, 20 carbon-something, an an antimatter (25 chromatic metal and something else negligible).
There is a ‘navigation data’ analogue for finding drop pods called drop pod data, and it’ll lead you directly to an upgrade. They’re rarer, but they exist, you just pop 'em in your signal booster!
The thing I didn’t know early on that isn’t readily apparent is that, before you hit the ‘install mod’ button, you can change the spot on your exosuit where the extra slot goes.
Thanks! I guess I’m going to go for buying them at the space stations. Repairing that stuff is so much hassle and I have the money anyway. Plus, with drop pods the location marker disappears once you arrive there. I had it repaired except for one ingredient. So I flew back to base to get it (I have a storage unit) and when I tried to find the drop pod again I just couldn’t do it. So always set a custom marker I guess is the lesson. But if you already have something important marked then that’s out of the question too because you can only have one custom marker, which is stupid. They should at least have given players to option of placing beacons down so you can find stuff again. (there are beacons in the game but they don’t work like that)
I also tried my hand at photo mode. I guess I’m not a good photographer because out of all the pictures I made I only remotely liked these two:
I still don’t understand how in the fuck you’re supposed to space battle in this game. Nothing I look up makes it clear why every time I get jumped by pirates my only recourse for survival is running until friendly NPC ships show up and kill them for me.
I have an A-class fighter ship with an S-class deflector shield upgrade, a photon cannon booster (with a second on the way once I can find 3 destabilized sodium) and rocket launchers. Pirates attack me? I’m down below half shields after the first pass if I stay and fight. What the fuck is this.
Idk, I have a C-class fighter from my pre-next save that I haven’t been able to change and I found space battles super easy…
The autolock on is very lenient and groups of 3 ships or 5 with help aren’t a big issue.
Anyway, you can jump off into space with your jetpacks now. You can land on frigates but unlike freighters or stations, they don’t have magnetized airlocks, just surface landing pads, which means the game allows you to jump away and, perhaps mercifully, kill you from space radiation if you “fall” too far away.
Thing is, if you die in this manner, you have to get back to your grave floating in space to recover your inventory. Another annoying UX feature is that if you do so, picking up stuff defaults to your ship inventory, which may be full, preventing you from picking up your things, and forcing you to float around your grave, moving stuff manually from your ship to your suit as your items trickle back in…
Also, the reason you can land on freighters is because they can get damaged during expeditions, and then you have to repair them yourself. The cool thing is that you get to see the ship’s bug systems malfunctioning and then making them work again. The dumb thing is that the ship crew of post-singular hyper-advanced hive mind beings has to call you to switch their engine core fuse, which seems so silly. It’s even reinforced in the comms message you get: “help, our crew is helpless to repair this big, obvious issue!” So silly
I’ve photo-moded a bit too. Even got some likes on Steam!
(excuse the different resolutions, I was trying to find optimum settings and this game requires a restart with every resolution change, so I just played like that until my next session)
There, that right there, that’s my problem! I didn’t know an auto-lock existed. I’ve just been manually dogging it out. I mean, I JUST now won a 3v1 but my ship was down to 2 hit-points or whatever the post-shield damage equivalent is. I guess it’s time to figure out how to auto-lock so I can play the space game again! I was out there just now mining silver and gold so I could build a fleet management room for my very first freighter when pirates jumped me, and I was on the verge of a fuck-it-all style ragequit.
