God I wish. No it was 100% some weird rich guy’s failproject that I signed onto because it sounded very cool and it wound up running on fumes for like 2 years of disastrous mismanagement before folding

Yep, I spent 20 minutes investigating this for fun and you guessed the right character.
ød is 0xF864 in Latin1, and 0xF864 is 鴇 “bustard” in GBK encoding. And then even though in the official GBK spec it’s a traditional character, the limited Windows 95 font fell back to the simplified Chinese character for “bustard”, 鸨
