26 episodes for the 26 endings would be a decent compromise.
you know, im still surprised they made a nier 2
Would have sold more as Drag On Dragoon 5
hell yeah, do it like aeon flux where each episode is a “what if” scenario without any larger continuity
scrap this; do a pascal movie
going to really funny when they have to change Sartre to Jean Paul in the english release.
What was missing from Automata was not pressing buttons.
after rewatching madoka last year i’ve started thinking automata is in some part a madoka fan-game, and this is why it’s so distasteful to some original nier fans
tbh, i don’t have much more than the opera boss being the witch sayaka part of the show, but i do feel like taro and urobuchi have some similar likes in what they want to do with their stories (“wouldn’t it be fucked up if…” + please cry)
i get the impression taro is more interested in being a pervert between them tho, and his texts gain something from that. and maybe that’s why automata is both less interesting to a lot of previous fans as well as more immediately popular, because it, at least stylistically and gamewise, dials all the perversion down to give something more digestible. at least the sidequests are still full of sickos and freaks. is yoko taro the only one at square who’d put in a sidequest helping out a guy fix up a malfunctioning boydroid only to find out he’s planning to “make a family” with him? some habits will never die even as the rest of the work is more “palatable”. i need to play the pissing dragon game where you butcher your sisters to steal their man-whores. that one seems good. wait those characters are extremely mahou shoujo coded, this fucker definitely watched madoka and loved it
Without looking it up I do believe there was side novel or manga that takes the intoners and puts them in a parody magical girl setting or at least had a title like one like utahime 5 if I remember.
As some one that enjoys the original more than Automata, I do feel that I find the surface level of the core story of automata kinda thin and flimsy. It’s the stuff at the side and unspoken stuff burried under it I’m more attracted to that I don’t think got enough lip service. I felt the original more satisfying even at just being a genre fiction fantasy tale where as I felt Automata’s scifi fiction a little anemic but had the spectacle to keep you hooked. Both games can be pretty easily boiled down to their point to point beats but I felt more willing to be drawn into the illusion of Replicant/Gestalt than Automata. I think one issue was alot of Automata’s plot beats were predicated much more on urgency of a command structure for most of the game where as Replistalt was more character driven given the player a little more time to absorb the role of the character.
Recent thoughts/posts have made me really feel like I should revisit Automata. I blasted through it during an extended visit in another country and didn’t really get to digest it or discuss it with anyone at the time. Since then my understanding of it has been kinda bitty through various internet fora.
I also find it sad that the world hasn’t really been revisited (Nier Reincarnation doesn’t count) outside of some good fan games and little tidbits. Feels overdue for something. Original Nier feels like a game I could play any time anywhere and never get sick of but I never managed another playthrough of Automata. It feels like a good time for it.
