Nier 2

why? It’s just save your moe-blob

I feel this so much.

I take it you haven’t had the chance to play Automata? It’s… also over the top anime writing. But it’s visually interesting and feels much better.

I haven’t yet. I don’t expect to care about the writing (I thought the writing was corny anime bullshit from the demo but that just puts it at the exact same level as nier 1, I’m def excited about a game having 21 silent hill 2 dog endings though. That kinda absurd excess is something I am into.)

Yeah, it really delivers on this front. So many ways to Do the Wrong Thing.

i guess i havent read enough animes for “Dying Little Girl” to immediately translate to “Moe-blob” in my head so I was able 2 get into the plot.

To be clear here, Nier didnt like Carve A Deep Place Into My Heart Forever, I just liked the characters & stuff more than Nier 2’s.

Also the joke endings don’t deliver at all. Every one I’ve seen was just a line of text & a black screen. Functionally they’re just a game over screen that lasts too long.

I kinda figured this was part of the appeal, I mean these games are basically completely over the top tragedy porn

It goes so far over the top it comes back around and feels legitimate again.

Can’t be overstated how much it relies on its “JRPG from the year 2075” genre mashup to maintain a charm conduit through which the melodrama can access your deep regions.

Also yes, it is completely dependent upon its soundtrack. But so what, so is Kubrick’s 2001.

nah, 2001 has some really great photography

Nier 2’s OST has been very good in the moment and all the variations that play and transition to are pretty fantastic but nothing has been the earwig that dug as deep as Song of the Ancients, Shadowlord or Emil Sacrifice.

So does Nier!

I felt that way at first but then I ended up listening to Birth of a Wish on repeat for hours

The amusement park theme is also great. And if you don’t feel anything by the end of A Beautiful Song, you just don’t have a soul

I’ll concede that I liked looking at that desert city

I don’t get what the appeal of the writing is, the extreme tragedy porn of it reminds me of Code Geass or a Gen Urobuchi show and those certainly never wrap around to actually good at any point. I just feel the same way about Nier 1. It’s like if suddenly people were re-evaluating Final Fantasy X’s plot as Good, Actually because it had a 2 minute long choose your own adventure segment in the middle

You don’t like anything though, so I mean

I’m looking forward to playing Nier 2! (in like 3 years probably because lol I am bad at doing the current release thing)

It sounds way more up my alley, addressing the things I specifically disliked most about the first game (the actual feel of playing the game and like 90% of the art direction were two things that were distinctly not my jam)

I’m a little confused about loops and endings

  • Is a loop just a NG?
  • Different loops have variations in plot?
  • How do those relate to endings?
  • Can I carry unfinished/unstarted Sidequests over to the next loop? Should I? (I’m an obsessive sidequest completionist, to the point where I let it hurt my enjoyment of a game out of fear of missing out on something)

I am afraid of googling these out of fear for spoilers

  • Not really, no
  • This varies from “somewhat” to “boy howdy yes”
  • incrementally
  • yes; yes

for 95% of sidequests if you don’t finish them in one loop you’ll have to start them again next time. if you do finish them, they are finished for good though.

A bit of a spoiler, with regard to missable sidequests:

There’s only one truly missable thing, one of the joke endings related to a fight with one of the postgame hidden bosses. For everything else, one of the endgame rewards is ‘Chapter Select’, which lets you pick up the game at any point so you can go back and sidequest to your heart’s content.

So you can march forward without regret.

Just don’t do sidequests. Seriously each loop is Max 6 hours without sidequests. And you only need to do three loops to get all five endings (this will make sense one you clear the third loop).

damn that loop c tho
