Each frame of animation is embroidered, and it looks like the husband and wife devs also play all the music.
What is it with indie devs making the most sumptuous, loving art styles and attaching them to the most basic ass games
Usually itâs because theyâre artists/animators first, game designers distant second.
To Scarlet Deer Innâs credit, that art style was so good I watched that whole trailer just now and couldnât tell you anything about what you actually do in the game besides walk around and talk to people. Is there more to it than that? I canât remember. I spent all that time thinking about how they made the game (which they thankfully somewhat answered at the very end with the behind the scenes peek).
that walking soundâŚ
i dunno why they donât make adventure games! this could be in service of something like pentiment or krz or even some arcane gilbertian comedy masochism
i suppose to mr mechâs point they might be writers third
i never liked the platforming in psychonauts, either, though. somebody must
Why donât they like⌠look for other team members. They could just post here. âCan play the lute and want to embroider every frame of 2d animation. Looking for someone to design a game around this and write something worthwhile.â Yeah I could do that, just ask
the most powerful first post ever conceived
i donât get why the animations have all that aftershading and touchup to make them look digital instead of leaning into looking like physical embroidery, whatâs the point⌠especially with the generic digital illustration backgrounds. stuff like this goes viral because the tagline sounds like a lot of work, not because people give a shit about the game itself or the ideas behind it or even really how it looks beyond surface polish. it sucks that the field/industry is such that doing a disgusting amount of labor almost singlehandedly towards no particular creative end is an effective meme recipe for indie dev twitter in itself, though who knows if anyone will care about the game when it comes out. itâs depressing!
can I have a wife who can do all this stuff? I canât be the husband who can help at all, or do anything else, but Iâm sure Iâve got something I can offer.
i guess itâs similar sort of thing as asking someone whoâs rlly into making ambient music âwhy not make a real song out of these cool soundsâ, just totally diff value systems. though i am sick of these sickly pastoral settings in games lol. something about game environments being constructed deliberately makes certain representations of nature in them feel very sour and miss the mark of what i assume is to get at this like sublime figure in landscape feeling
In my experience there are a lot more underwhelming indie games due to design issues, not taste issues. Or tech issues. Or art issues. Itâs really hard to get all those disciplines working at a high gear together between one or two people. Kind of like expecting someone to be a great songwriter and musician. There are people who can do it, but there are a lot more who need help and thatâs ok.
I agree with this, but for some reason seeing her doing her super leap in underground passages rewound time for me and had me in â00s territory, where your peaceful art game could have default gamemaker physics and a Mario jump and it was refreshing stil
it sounds like dayZ
So the workflow is to draw/design the sprites on a computer, have a machine embroider those sprites, and then scan the sprites into a computer and add enough digital gloss and smoothing and flattening effects to effectively obsucre the materiality of the embroidery?
Ok
I donât want to harsh on a guy that clearly put a lot of effort into an absolutely massive project, but I am kind of tired of the general trend of seeing âshiny new homebrew Game Boy gameâ and it just being a GB Studio thing with the default GB Studio look (okayish) and feel (bad). It gives me very little faith in the ability of the tool to produce anything with non-trivial mechanics.
My joints creak and the lines in my face deepen as I experience nostalgia for nostalgia for my childhood
what a wild time to choose to start using twitter
Hmm, apparently Amazon has an in-browser game-streaming service called Luna? And you can for whatever reason play Yakuza Kiwami 2 with it, for free, if you have Prime, now, for some limited amount of time.
Also apparently you can use the âCouchâ feature to send someone a link that allows them to join a co-op session with you?
Which you could theoretically use to play Virtua Fighter 2 from the title screen.
Hmm. Huh.
