the fact that they’re going with mid-budget games and original properties here makes it feel like this initiative is being spearheaded by somebody with actual taste and a healthy understanding of the economics of the industry

Like, don’t get me wrong, I am not happy about Sony doing it now, because I liked that consoles didn’t do that, but here we are.
Can’t find the post now, but it’s been suggested that this change was made to close a loophole with Playstation’s refund system. You can refund games up to 14 days after purchase on Playstation, and allegedly after 15 days the 30 day online checkup DRM is replaced with a lifetime offline DRM.
the thing is, even ‘lifetime’ licenses can still be revoked whenever they want. whatever happens this time, the digital distribution model is built to work this way intentionally.
