Some speedrunners also have a good game list, such as RCHelicoptr, who has played every game surprise me. I can’t find those by myself or any recommending.
Their strong preference for a specific game may have shaped that taste through their long time on a single game.

Is that where the term “no life king” comes from? I see it used in isekai fantasy novels and media all the time as a synonym for a Lich and I was wondering why.
I thought it had an older connotation like how all Japanese fantasy media call heroes “braves,” because it morphed from how old timey heroes were called things like “Galahad the brave.”

i’ve seen “braves” used as a term for male native american fighter/adventurer type characters before, too. but only in really old stuff, so that usage presumably has some horrifically racist roots.

renting games was illegal in Japan if not by this point, then very shortly thereafter and the prohibition on it just created a culture where a segment of gamers just tried to bumrush through games as quickly as possible to sell back to shops for maximum value
not for nothing, they tried that here in the US too but only kinda sorta succeeded
the porno quote owns because while it’s clearly positioned in a post-Druaga world, there are quite a few genres that more or less only exist in a modern concept for sickos and because they only exist for sickos, they have to be made for sickos and it creates an endless feedback loop and this is why Cave exists as a company that makes a phone game about gothic dolls instead of bullet hell games

Something I think about sometimes is that while this kind of business/subculture feedback loop seems pretty universal, when the niche fanbase is American the usual result is peculiarly specific ultraviolence, whereas when the niche fanbase is Japanese the usual result is peculiarly specific sex appeal

Cave is a shadow of its former self, but it’s also remarkable that a company whose heyday was over two decades ago continues to exist in a vaguely recognizable form under the same brand. Supplying tiny niches is if nothing else, a way to survive and continue operating.
Whereas similarly situated American game studios come under heavy pressure from their investors or parent company to try to make something with greater potential to make huge $$. And if they fail at that, the studio either folds or finds its staff fully assimilated into a larger conglomerate.

the braves were named in 1912 which i think was like 20 years after buffalo bill’s variety show toured europe and performed for the pope, they were named for western genre fiction. relevancy isn’t real

Finally, I get into a phenomenon I have anecdotally experienced, but now have scientific proof of–that having to go to the bathroom makes you better at playing video games. Research from the University of Twente in the Netherlands uncovered that having to pee helps you make less impulsive decisions.
