Remember going to a burrito place on the way back from the first buttcon and they were playing the persona 4 soundtrack

Years ago Rudie and I were sitting in this Tokyo bar. It felt like we were in a survival horror game. At one point the Mario 64 underwater music started playing. It was very weird. They were listening to some, like, college radio station from the UK? It was very odd. Treasured memory.

The unity stuff is frustrating and basically pushing me more and more into another engine for my next project. They’re going to run out of developers eventually, because nearly everyone switches to Unreal after shipping a Unity project. The one thing unity needed to do was build a game using their own engine to greatly smooth over the development process, and they refuse to. But they’ll buy Weta? They’ll tease new features and then not add them? They’ll merge with other companies? Make dubious partnerships with defense contractors?

I worry off the shelf engines are going to get so complex that they’ll be like the creaking AAA studio engines that they mean to replace, if they arent there already. Sometimes I feel like I should learn C and make games with GBA tools, because emulators will be around forever and as long as a rom exists the game is playable.

Unity always seemed kind of like a product of the 2010s tbh, the one time I saw how much MonoGame shit was under the hood from its XNA heritage I was horrified

like it was great while it lasted (easily responsible for the best period of native Mac and Linux releases, of low end, laptop games that got commercial attention no less, in history) but increasingly I don’t see how it’s possibly supposed to last

the entire rest of the industry being on Unreal seems dumb for plenty of theoretical reasons but I’m at least not that familiar with the practical ones and I don’t think it’s worth trying to maintain this duopoly as an alternative

yeah, once Apple decided all developers needed a $120 a year apple developer account to sign applications for release and break backwards compatability for older games that sorta buried any hope of having a good cross platform universal game engine.

People keep talking about Godot but I’m having flashbacks to when they killed flash and I was doing a bunch of Flixel/AS3 stuff and wondering what to do next. Part of me wants to go backwards and fork the IdTech 4 engine.
