Patricia’s tenure was probably the least bad era of kotaku for whatever it’s worth
that the article that caused natalie lawhead so much misery was finally deleted around the start of her tenure does make this true by default, though that’s probably the only good thing I can say about kotaku of the past two years
yeah I’ve shit on the site like every time it’s ever come up on here lol but at least Patricia was trying. Its not like she inherited a good foundation. It can only get worse from here. My phone stopped recommending me the site finally at least which is good timing!
I dont know they had a lot of puff pieces on predatory gambling esque games/mechanics
I’m insulted by the implication that they cared about multiple games preying on gambling addictions
it was just one writer who made her job just writing constantly about Genshin and then she went to go work for the company making it
honestly it was a weird focus in hindsight because they still continued to give shit to other games with any kind of questionable monetization
I appreciate what kotaku was trying to be under Hernandez, but it was still home to some of the most insipid videogame ‘discourse’ I’ve seen outside of the Screenrant family of websites in the past few years
On July 29, 2024, Xbox will stop supporting the ability to purchase new games, DLC, and other entertainment content from the Xbox 360 Store on the console and the Xbox 360 Marketplace (marketplace.xbox.com)
Related to this change, the Microsoft Movies & TV app will no longer function on Xbox 360, which means TV and movie content will no longer be viewable on your Xbox 360 after July 29th, 2024.
Some exclusive Hitman 1 PS4 content was just unexclusived
ahh this sucks. i used it as a loophole recently to get some back compat game that was delisted on the current store.
Looks nice. Sakimoto music. Interview with Matsuno, for some reason, on the steam page where the devs gush about how much they love Tactics Ogre.
Oh, lol, nm.
you can’t pirate on a 360 without actual physical modding, can you?
ya its fairly involved iirc. the xbox lan i was at had 3 modded 360s but the guy did that kind of thing as a hobby.
That writer and john walker (ugh) also wrote some puff pieces on that notorious diablo phone game preying on gambling addictions
To be a little sympathetic to kotaku advocating for child gambling addiction; I could imagine dealing with constant gamer harassment while full-time commenting on and regurgitating press releases could wear a mind down enough that it it feels righteous to side with the only ppl openly sympathetic to you when you see gamers have started targeting them as well.
Resisting that impulse is a fundamental aspect of journalism but I feel like (, in addition to all the various budget cuts, etc. that journalism has suffered) this also is at least partially a gamergate consequence when game companies sided with their “fans” rather than the press and pulled ads, etc. while regressive enthusiast-presenting(uncritical) YouTubers like total biscuit or whatever capitalized on the opportunity.
there’s def no question that gamergate and just the constant gamer hostility/obsession towards Kotaku in particular caused a lot of doubling down in ways that just made things worse in the long run. i think a lot of those people are just very traumatized. it’s the same sort of media landscape that led to people having a mini moral panic over the movie Joker.
edit: also a lot of those places have aggressively stupid editorial mandates from higher ups, which seems like the reason Patricia was fired and a lot of online media in general is going down the toilet
VERY Good news for people who can’t help themselves from vocally referencing the bosconian alert noise but nobody understands it so they figure out how to make a custom iphone alert tone (garageband) so they can set it to the bosconian alert noise

while I do think it’s hilarious that ‘strict tactics ogre clone’ is now a genre, I am definitely the sucker that would buy this if it were a real game, so that’s a shame. that art style is strictly an improvement over square’s octopath people, it looks good.

Like a Dragon 8 demo with Like a Dragon Gaiden
I feel like it’ll be 10 years before I get around to playing this but I’ll probably listen to the soundtrack immediately
