can they do anything if you just refuse to pay? I feel like that’s probably the most reasonable thing for smaller devs to do. at least with regards to games that are already out there.
I have the feeling they’ve created this scheme to extract money from very large f2p folks who are getting a free ride and it’s being complicated by a thousand developers who are nowhere near 200k downloads but would love to inflate themselves to be the target. Even unity is saying “we have secret detection methods shhh” and folks take that as “panopticon that’s flawed and will crush me in the end” and not “they can’t keep track of it all and I’m obviously not worth the squeeze so lol” and now unity has to backtrack and explain their probably-fake scheme a hundred times with caveats, honestly very much musk-style.
Like this is such a weird ass read to me. Like… I’m offended I’m not a target? Like the writer grasps the situation but it’s still framed as like, neglect by papa unity. People can believe that the rule/decision was not made with them in mind, but can’t simultaneously grasp that they don’t actually have to be reader of it or, likely, even subject to it! Most people are in the situation to say WHO CARE yet nobody is? Idk. I guess I’d rather just imagine people pirating my game 200,000 times to charge me… 15 cents. And then… I’d pay it? Very very upsetly? Probably even keep my credit card on file and await that invoice to @the_kyphosis_gamer
Edit: also “retroactively” is so fucked and I feel sorry for anyone who legit has their livelihood made uncertain by this, plus I understand that unity is usable cuz of free plugin labor and now they wanna capitalize and everyone’s doing this, like how all the third party Reddit apps got recently fucked.
But I am also imagining the future where under every viral “x” there’s a “in all seriousness if you like my content please consider donating to my friends unity bail fund, channer botnets have driven him up to the 800k-1M tier”
They haven’t announced it officially; they did announce that this is the first time FM will be released in Japan, that Japanese can be set as the language option, and the guy who made by far the best J-League database that you could add to previous games as a mod is like “hey guys I’m under NDA for FM24 lol”.
