as a non-european, the world of c64 (and amiga) games still seems so fascinating. an entire parallel world of game development almost wholly without the influence of the consensus “good” (often japanese) sensibilities of console/arcade game design. i’ve tried to dip my toes in a few times, but i haven’t been able to set aside my biases and expectations enough to actually enjoy myself. maybe 2026 is the year where i can finally do this…

I know the secret to unlock the addiction of 8bit computer: learn the basic language.

Though most of the games weren’t written in basic language but unlike the high-score culture in gaming community, the 8-bit computer community living in a lifestyle like got enjoyable through programming, discover new effects through videogame, and inspired their own new idea put into programming.

From influencer eg 8bit guy to any European MSX hermits, 8bit computer games are rooted in the immense joy found in programming and hardware geek culture.

What makes this different from the average M.U.G.E.N. asset flip?

While some assets are used from a myriad of games by CAPCOM, unlike the average M.U.G.E.N. asset flip, this project has an intentional design approach planned from top-to-bottom. Instead of various characters ripped from different authors without change, these characters were designed with their own system from the ground up to mesh with each other smoothly; 2/3rds of the cast have entirely original sprite sets. Additionally, the UI/UX design, stage design, music and character sprite sets are all carefully curated to accentuate the point that this is a serious passion project, and not your run-of-the-mill compilation.

Was Labyrinths of Yomi good? I’ve been curious to check it out but my only experience with first person dungeon crawlers is Etrian Odyssey.

It’s probably the best example of the new-wave Wizardry-style dungeon crawlers of the last few years. I would also say that of all the games Experience Inc has made, Yomi is their most user friendly for people who aren’t already up to their ears in grid paper.
