The quality of my life is not governed by what Nintendo does with Nintendo Directs, or what Nintendo does in general, but that 40th SMB anniversary thing was pretty lackluster. All I want is Super Mario Bros. 35 back. Or Super Mario Bros. 3 - 40 or something.

Also, was hoping for something new this Christmas that was actually Switch 2 exclusive.

At least Bananza is good.

I hope there’s interviews with the fake devs and a rumor corner

I like how the timestamps are for song names and not game names.

Every time microprose posts something new to the steam store i’m like what the fuck year is it? It’s all this shit I played when I was a kid. How much money can they possibly be making selling DOS games from 1995 for 10 dollars on Steam when they are literally available on abandonware websites. And it’s not like Microprose does anything to these games besides the bare minimum, like fucking Harpoon '97 didn’t even come with the latest patch when they put it out last month lol. It’s cool to see HISTORY CHANNEL BATTLE OF BRITAIN again or whatever but it is funny to me how transparently it is the microprose guy trying to strengthen his claim to copyright on this stuff

I think I saw that they’re remaking B-17 entirely within MSFS. idk where they have the resources for that, but hopefully it’s cool

No, they’re making a B-17 for microsoft flight simulator. they already “remade” B-17

and it’s the same exact game with the same fucked up UI and uglier new high res textures. the new b-17 model is pretty good though. they made this because people were really excited about Masters of the Air lmao and it’s still not done

What I wanna know is when is somebody going to make a lil boutique indie sim about British WW2 AA guns. There’s a whole lotta things you could simulate, the angle of the guns and the length of the fuse. I guess if I knew anything about game development I’d make it myself. It’d be cool cause all the Gamers would lose their minds after learning the guns were operated by women.

It has the same problem with a lot of good ww2 simulator ideas which is that it requires both a load of research and is very difficult to design a compelling game around from a dry simulator grognard perspective… this is largely why there are only submarine games about the us navy and the kriegsmarine, even though there’s freaks like me who wish someone would make a ww2 soviet submarine sim, because it’s not a super easy thing to find out comparatively (there are hundreds of memoirs and books about american and german submarine shit from the era) and they mostly fucked around in the black sea with total naval superiority blowing up torpedo boats and merchantmen, which is of course not that interesting or much of a challenge for the player… like if someone made the AA gunner game, which I would be fascinated to play, realistically you’d end up getting a game like beach head 2000 with semi-realistic gunnery physics.

now if we let a woman make the game and like maybe you never even get your kills confirmed and it had actual writing in between the air raids then we’re cooking I think. I mean honestly I think the problem with most grog games is that they think history isn’t like a story in itself and just a pile of statistics and numbers but it is also true when they try to use narrative to flesh out what you’re doing it’s usually boring. I’ve played multiple dcs and IL-2 campaigns now with more of a “story” focus but only one or two were actually engaging. Historical war games should be effective edutainment first and foremost. And it’s like they’re allergic to actual characterization, but that dovetails with what I’ve seen of people in the sim community treating the geopolitical melodrama among other things of ace combat like it’s completely uncompelling loser shit for babies. like a bunch of aging men who want to tell you about how reading fiction is a waste of time. Sorry I guess this is kind of a tangent, I just play a lot of these games.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/283910083/blanksword

the kickstarter for Blanksword has launched, and there’s now also demo live on steam. it’s pretty lengthy ~ i remember during playtesting taking 4 or so hours overall, but im pretty slow paced. live streamers take at least 2-3 it seems

this game is trying to thread the needle in terms of creating an actual jrpg plot with momentum on top of a roguelite sort of loop. think the way hades has pretty persistent character arcs, but applying that to the A-Plot as well. its a bit hard to describe the other ways this marries those genres but its pretty intuitive when playing. the way your stable build is crafted is a bit like disco elysiums thought cabinet in how certain upgrades are responsible for opening new branches in dialogue, which goes pretty unexplained in the game so far

it seems like it’ll hit about 25% completion tonight, so im pretty hopeful, but my understanding of kickstarter metrics is pretty out of date at this point. in my opinion they are probably not asking quite enough and ideally this helps out as a negotiation piece if they get any more publisher interest. again, im not deeply involved, basically just some ux advice and wrote a few shaders, but id be grateful of anyone who takes a look or helps share over the next month

I listened his interview and sounds he’s a nice and pragmatic business guy on this job. But I feel it’s not simply a struggle between good community and greedy company.

After the launch of CMANO in November 2013, Don Gilman, president of AGSI, announced that all work on the commercial version of Harpoon had ceased. The licensing rights were returned to Larry Bond and Don Carlson.

HarpGamer (either actively or passively) missed or passed up opportunities between 2013 and 2018. And after David Lagettie bought MicroProse from a dusty warehouse of a pellet gun company, I guess he successfully convinced Larry Bond.

I’m not sure you’re getting the full story from forum posts because I don’t know what your point is. I don’t think microprose was scheming against harpgamer but harpgamer was the party working on the latest version of harpoon up until matrix lost the publishing rights. which was this year. i don’t get what opportunities harpgamer passed up when they’ve been actively working on computer harpoon this entire time. so all the stuff about ceasing development in 2013 seems irrelevant to me. larry bond decided he didn’t want to keep dealing with matrix at the the same time microprose announced they were releasing harpoon '97 again, which was well after that point. he was fine with what they were doing for over a decade. my complaint is that you cannot buy that version of the game and instead have to buy a microprose version that is only up to date to the year 1997 as opposed to 2025. so you literally are missing out on decades of codebase improvements to harpoon. you also can’t even buy harpoon 3 or the archival release with many versions of harpoon anymore. there has been no communication as to whether they are even interested in publishing that stuff, or as to what will happen to it, besides matrix and harpgamer going “buy it before we can’t sell it to you I guess” like two months before the deadline. this is also annoying on larry bond’s part too

microprose is not going to support development of the old harpoon game the same way, nor do I think they will make a brand new harpoon game, this version is out because it’s the only one they actually have the rights to through iEntertainment Network. maybe someone at microprose will bother to learn about harpoon outside of “this is a game we can sell” because they dump tons of old games on steam constantly and if I had to guess I don’t think most of the people who work at the new microprose are super passionate about any of these mid 90s DOS dad games. plus sea power is cool but it’s not a replacement for harpoon, and neither is command despite their visual similarities

My point is simple that I will give more time and more trust to Microprose.

I guess the game I’m picturing in my head is this game (which isn’t out yet) but with an AA gun.

A game about shooting nazis out of the sky featuring a bunch of girls wearing “teddy bear coats”??? Come on.
