Same for me with XII. Except I was much older than 20, and it’s still my favorite of the series.
I tried reading a plot summary of x last night and apparently I had made it to the very end of the game before quitting but otherwise I couldn’t remember a single thing it was talking about
the most important thing to remember about X is that by the rules of their setting and story, there are no stakes at all to anything that happens in the game.
when i think of games i can’t stand ff x and xenoblade x are the two that immediately come to mind… fuck…
What about Revolution X?
huh i didn’t expect this thread to be so negative— i don’t think ffx is holistically “good” by any means but i feel sort of warmly to it nowadays, i guess mostly re: its structure and a bunch of useless mechanical stuff that i think is real cute, and yeah big chunks of the music and art and vibe, even if so much of it is incomprehensible
it’s wild that they spent so many years making vii/viii/ix and leaned so far into those prerendered backgrounds to, like, consistently breathtaking effect, and then the day the ps2 came out it was just, oh, we immediately permanently quit making those
Another negative for me about FFX: that sometimes there’s still a pre-rendered background.
Not because I don’t like them.
Because Squaresoft is obviously a failure if they can’t do every background in polygons on the goddamn PS2
are there some? i don’t remember any but maybe it’s been too long
I actually feel like the prerendered backgrounds in the original release of X are fairly tastefully blended with the realtime stuff. you don’t really notice it at all unless you are looking for it.
it’s kind of a shame that prerendered backgrounds went away right in the era where, if used properly, they could produce truly stunning results like in the resident evil remake for gamecube
trying to think if there are literally any other 6th gen games that use a mix of prerendered backgrounds and rendered polygons at all aside from FFX and REmake
galaxy oddity thread?
Onimusha?
yeah most of what I really loathe about X has everything to do with square tossing out a lot of things they’d done well immediately previous to it
it does have a lot of pleasant jRPG garbage window dressing, like I don’t know if space funeral or Barkley would fit in a world without this game that deliberately lost the plot
Yeah Onimusha was all pre-rendered backgrounds for at least 2 games.
shadow hearts 1 was prerendered, don’t know if the others were
Onimusha 2 was probably the best looking game with pre-rendered backgrounds, until REmake
yeah, wow I had completely forgotten about this game. it’s kind of the missing DNA between resident evil, dino crisis, and devil may cry.
i have such strong memories of how good this looked, but im always scared about going back to it
Pretty sure Baten Kaitos was like this too
They did the exact same thing going from the gorgeous spritework of FF6/Chrono Trigger to the harsh polygonal rock and steel of FF7. Throwing out your skills to get on the next bandwagon was how game companies survived in the nineties
I think this is why, in that era, so many players complained that “graphics” were overemphasized compared to “gameplay”. It was an inarticulate way of complaining about the grotesqueness that came with generational tech changes
“graphics” > “art style”
gesamtkunstwerk > singular elements
