well it’s not like it stooped being important. They just released that stupid box. So now there’s money tied to it again.
Square’s Tom Sawyer just had a fantranslation released. I started it up, read two dialogue boxes of Jim, and immediately deleted it. They aimed for the flavor of the original text, and I guess it’s there (though obviously the text isn’t going to be Twain-level prose), but oh god do I feel dirty for it.
Earlier systems: 'I don’t know what that is’
Nes: 'I know what that is’
Later systems: ‘I know exactly what that is’
NES games have a comfortable level of ambiguity to them.
Interesting theory…
I like that.
Based on assorted recommendations here I played a bit of Dr. Chaos, Cocoron, and Little Samson. All three were a great time.
Cocoron is gorgeous, the character creation is surprisingly robust, and it’s great fun to design your character around the obstacles you’ve found in the game. I’m definitely going back to that one. It feels really polished and friendly and fair in a way that most NES games don’t. It kind of reminds me of Kirby’s Adventure.
Dr. Chaos is just weird as hell, and that rules. I love how mysterious it is, and how willing it is to totally mess with your expectations. I did not expect that window experience alluded to upthread at all.
For ages I’ve wanted one of those custom NES carts that you get from dodgy online shops, with the English translation of Cocoron. I made a label and everything, about ten years ago.
It’s based on the actual Cocoron Famicom cart, which I have – I found it in a shop in Los Angeles, the first E3 I went to – but don’t have a means to play…
Has anyone played that Super Pitfall fan patch yet? The game has always intrigued me, despite being practically unplayable due to all the bugs. There is something deeply mysterious about it.
