And here I am, planning to never use the Humble code I got for it

Time to go redeem it

In other Nintendo news, there are rumors afoot that the NX portable will use an Nvidia GPU. Which is crazy since Nvidia is infamous for being a shitty partner and also points to NX being based on ARM.

So PS4.1 is apparently really going to be a thing. What’s even the point of consoles any more?

they don’t run windows and they’re much better priced and better-optimized-for than current GPUs

I guess we can blame apple’s 2 year phone upgrade cycle for normalizing this

in fairness, this gets them over the minimum spec for oculus and vive (that projected GPU is ~ a 970), which is gonna make VR ports vastly easier, and if it just means the difference between 720p30 and 1080p60 for all other titles it’s hard to fault them doing it, particularly if it makes the base model (which has been reasonably priced from the start) more affordable

PC hardware has been fairly unappealing as long as the PS4 has been on the market (literally every interesting title that hasn’t come to console, and the same console at that, will run on an Intel GPU which wasn’t at all the case last time) so mostly I’m just hoping I don’t feel pressured to replace my console because that’s a bit of a waste.

Now I just want Apple to support one of those external GPU docks on the next batch of MBPs and the VR runtimes to be ported to OSX/Linux

Dreamcast game with unreasonably low kickstarter.

requisite when anyone posts re: vr like it’s actually going to be a thing:

I’d like to have seen the Bloomberg version of that cover

I’m not sure that you can be that bearish on VR right now though. the only real cynical observation I’d make is that it seems to be almost exclusively of interest to a) developers and b) people with a lot of disposable income at the moment. also the current setups seem unwieldy (hotplugging hdmi displays in Windows after running a bunch of extra cabling through the living room, great) but that’s all fixable.

Like Palmer Luckey, virtual reality tech, despite still being massively awkward after over two decades of development, is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. a good post.
