my childhood multicart

i don’t know what the point of this thread is, but i’ve wanted to write something about this for a while. when i was a kid, the pre-owned game boy i bought with my birthday money one year came with a few cartridges. wwf superstars 2, the first ever wrestling-related piece of media i’d owned (but not the one that would make a wrestling fan out of me). a dog-chewed copy of tetris that worked perfectly if you stuffed its mangled case into the cartridge slot. super mario land 2, my first ever mario game. bart vs the juggernauts, a game that would haunt me for years.

but most interesting was the pirate cart. it was different to any other pirate cart i’d seen before, and any i’ve seen since. instead of the usual menu with all the games listed multiple times, it had a little yellow button on it, which you pressed to cycle through the games. you’d also cycle through them if you turned the system off and on quick enough, so i guess that explains how it worked.

here’s the list of games that were on the cart from memory. i think i’ve even got the order of most of them correct, too!

tetris
tennis
dr mario
alleyway
battle city
shanghai
motorcross maniacs
hyper lode runner
q billion
master karateka
world bowling
heiankyo alien
dragon slayer
flipull: an exciting cube game
penguin land
flappy special
trump boy
daedalian opus
pitman
sokoban 2
tasmanian story
palamedes
koro dice
klax
loopz
space invaders
othello
volleyfire
pipe dream
shisenshou match mania

I had one of these and it ruled until I fried it by putting in a wrong voltage AC adapter

I never had a real pirate cart but we did have an all black YOBO

image

it had a wobbly adapter plug init for US games so to be safe we kept a roll of painters tape to secure thecarts.
It has terrible sound and the colors are all slightly wrong

A friend of mine had a 100-in-1 gameboy cart that twas like double length.
it was the usual 10 games repeated but with various cheats and edits.

All I had were the CDs full of dos titles, along with a kind of shoddy Amiga emulator

my main pirate cart memory is being super excited for warioware and struggling to explain to my parents that it was a real thing and not some shitty pirate cart scam.

haha i was rejected from a ‘videogame snob’ community on livejournal once cuz i said one of my favorite games was warioware and they said it was action 52 trash

they also accused me of being lol wacky random when i said super street fighter 2 turbo was my favorite fighting game?? they assumed a real, maTure snob would simply say ‘street fightre’ so i have no idea what they even played

my actual multicart experience is with a VECTREX. when i got it it was like 50 games and tour de france didnt work

now its 100 something games and it looks like they have some bullshit trick to make tour de france work but I BET YOU IT DOESNT FUCKING WORK

oh damn it even has a box now this is getting fancy!!!

absolutely love Communities For Nobody that are like, 9 people who subsist entirely on hating people outside their in-group but nobody really knows what defines their in group other than the hating

like watching someone half-fill a balloon, give up and tie it off, then let it slowly deflate over the course of 9 months.

my cousin had a 32 in 1 cart for her atari 2600 and it was DOPE because it had fishing derby. it was an official one that came with (much later) editions of the console

I dont think I had any multicarts or bootlegs when I was a kid, lots of shareware discs though! these days I love finding bootleg stuff in op shops and such. i also collect carts put out by HES, I have a NES multicart by them that has death race and chiller on it. no sachen unfortunately, though I have some sachen gb multicarts that I found in op shops.

it never occurred to me that warioware may seem like bootleg trash to some people, how nutty.

do those discs with a bunch of user-made levels for doom and stuff ripped off the net and sold without permission count as multicarts? cause I had some of those haha
