I watched I Am Mother with the wife last weekend and it was… alright I guess.
Yeah these were my thoughts on it:
parasite is great. just in awe of song kang-ho’s facial mastery.
finally watched oshii’s urusei yatsura 2 beautiful dreamer which was… fine, a few really inventive sequences but nothing on the level of patlabor 2 or angels egg. he can be a frustrating one.
The lonely pointless pleasures of marking time as a teen have never been captured better than in this movie.
Comparing it to his non comedy work is totally alien to me
Anyway, I like Oshii’s authorial voice most when he undercuts philosophical m haings with slapstick (though I do adore angels egg and patlabor 2) so this movie and gosenzosama banbanzai really stand out to me as immaculately enjoyable and with the wonderful contradiction in tone
If you want another flavor of serious oshii that I loved a lot, twilight q part 2 was an excellent work of surreal noir
I’d like to think a bunch of the filming locations in the first half of True Romance are QT’s homages to Detroit 9000, but I don’t think he had that level of control over the production. It loses some points for trying to pass off that LA Art Deco movie theater as downtown locale, when the last surviving couple downtown movie palaces turned porn theaters were still available. Hell, near the time of filming, the Madison was in the middle of doing a very short lived attempt at being an art house. It would have been perfect.
Terminator Dark Fate: it’s Terminator except they do alternate timeline nonsense because Judgement Day Must Happen and it’s just as silly and dumb as Cameron’s except the action isn’t as good so you start thinking about how time travel would work, but otherwise is okay
Last Christmas: I liked this until the twist and then I hated it
the Konosuba movie: this is pretty great if you’re into the series’s sense of humor and is strong in general except for the part where they take a page from animeisbadatgender.txt
oh, also, Dark Fate is a good movie if you want to see US Border police get murdered
PLANE MOVIES PLANE MOVIES
Rewatched Annihilation. I liked it a lot more this time. I knew the visuals were never going to go where I wanted and could concentrate on the emotional elements more. It is really strong in that department.
Disney’s Aladdin is the highest grossing film in Japan this year. Could never get behind how it looks like an FMV game and like cosplay of the anime. The 50 minutes I watched felt like a fake joke movie that was going to pull into a real movie.
Booksmart and Toy Story 4 lasted me 10 minutes before I ejected wondering how anyone put up with that sort of thing.
Parasite was…okay. Granted I skipped large chunks to finish it before my flight landed. Curious about how many of y’all enjoyed it.
I think I had the best time with Xmen Dark Phoenix which was an awful movie no one should watch. Just that almost every decision landed with a thud.
how on earth…
oh
these are literally two of the better movies of the year
TS4 is really good considering it’s pretty bluntly a rumination on a man on the verge of suicide
but, you know, for kids
i only watched the first like 30m of booksmart but i was hatin on it too
yeah I (unsurprisingly) loathed booksmart
parasite rules tho
I’ve said it way upthread but Booksmart is great because it does such a good job on dunking on a specific set of people and also Billie Lourd is a treasure
I still need to see Parasite and Taxi Dri- err, Joker
I said it before, after i watched it. But, Toy Story 4 was inessential. If you haven’t seen a Toy Story since 1 ----- you’d probably come away with a solid feeling about it.
But otherwise, it sort of needlessly rehashes and remixes sentiments from the previous movies. Its pretty much a spiritual remake of 3. With the emphasis slightly different. But, every single thing about it is weaker. Aside from the butt kicking visuals jesus christ.
*and its tough for me to be so critical of TS4, because I really love Toy Story, in general.
i watched spectre the other day w/ some of my bros and i just don’t get james bond at all. the only one of these movies i’ve really enjoyed is tomorrow never dies. i don’t think they’re awful or whatever, i just feel like i get what i would want from james bond from the temple of doom and the osamu dezaki golgo 13 movie. idk i will give on her majesty’s secret service and casino royale a shot bc everyone says those are the best.
i also watched hi, mom! and robert de niro is literally just vibing in that movie
completely agree with both of these posts
