I have it out for A24 because I did either the world or DC premiere of The Sixth and when the filmmakers asked for a copy to give to me, I got a goddamn 4k prores master

this is not a deliverable and furthermore I

we were looking for something fun and didn’t know the first one was a brian de palma movie until looking it up because they kept cutting between these two incredibly odd shots, one dutch and one looking up a guy’s nose

the first 3 MIs are all these very weird and uneven director showpieces, and technically the 4th one was as well, but it turned out way more straightforwardly good and reproducible than the previous installments so 5 and 6 could actually build directly on it for a change

instead we watched carrie, which, just saying, is an odd movie to reference wrt to your child, mom

As early as I can remember, one of my mom’s stock phrases when I was an impatient or misbehaving child was to quote Sybil and tell me to ā€œhold your water!ā€

oh man you were not kidding

tom cruise peeling off two different old man masks in the first movie blunted the face/off self-homage a bit

much more into 2. it’s like a nascent vision of justin lin F&F

excited to see which of JJ’s fetishes make it in

yeah 1 is probably the worst after 3 imo (and them trying to tie 7 back to 1 was significantly responsible for why it was so much worse than 4-6)

3 has a couple things going for it (mostly PSH) but it is such a heavy handed time capsule of how wayward literally all the principals’ careers were at the time it was made

2 is not good (if nothing else it’s like, way too similar to several much better movies) but it’s easily the most entertaining of the not-yet-great ones

also very funny to learn where IO lifted many hitman scenarios from

2 is kind of remarkable for how much it anticipated and provided the template for the good MI films. A focus on stunts that tom cruise did himself, the first ā€œmask under a maskā€ gag, a sense of humor and a campy cartoony tone. Its very easy for me to like even while acknowledging that its not precisely good.

literally just screamed at a mask gag in 3. earlier we wondered aloud whether there would be masks in this one moments before they were 3D printing philip seymour hoffman’s head

imagining an exponential escalation of mask tricks on the same trajectory of fast 9 going to space

7 is literally the IMF crew trying to defeat a rogue AI

it’s stupid alright

i mean like… the prosthetic mask equivalent of a pontiac fiero in orbit in the car movies
