I just broke into tears at the sight of this poster
wow mena suvari, remember her
yeah every time something bad happened to her on screen we were like THIS IS WHAT YOU GET FOR FUCKING KEVIN SPACEY
this poster is even better
this reminds me of Sam Raimi’s Quibi film The Woman with the Golden Arm
The Legend & Butterfly (2023)
Lady No and our good ol’ Pal Oda Nobunaga in a romance flick, sign me up! … yeah, that sounds better than it actually is, indeed.
On the plus side, 70th Toho anniversary (J-)TripleA budget that makes this movie feel well produced (i.e. on par with other top tier productions), you just cannot go wrong with Samurai Warriors plot (and cast).
otoh:
I get it, Kimura and Ayase have been around decades ago, star power et al, and Ayase steals the show, tho made hilariously easy by virtue of Kimura being cringeworthy at best, and outright embarrasing most of the time. Enough so as to start wondering if Japan doesn’t have, you know, uh - a main actor who’d maybe have been a better choice?
Weird start into this movie watching Oda and his bros being toxic apes with juvenile humor that’s maybe funny if you’re nine or ten (max)?
Soundtrack is Zimmer-bombastic, though at times it totally doesn’t fit the mood and you wonder… whyyy?
And then there’s the almost three hours runtime, cut out the start and some useless exposition and we’d be easily in the more acceptable 2h realm.
And, worst of all:
When the movie’s over, sat thinking about it for a while… you start to appreciate how good the Dynasty Warriors movie was ![]()
DW felt more epic, lush, entertaining, was leaning more into the well known and beloved KemcoToei visual language than this, just felt better in any regard, had a cast that felt more engaging, managed to fit all into 2h w/o dragging its feet…
so tl;dr ![]()
this involuntary high-budget-yet-trashy Oda×No Romcom is leaving me with bits of regret and what-could-have-been, 2.5

I’ve been watching lots of Elvis movies. The goal is to see all of the films he had starting roles in. I have never listened to his music and I don’t know much about him. But I was intrigued by his ambition to be an actor, but to never really be taken seriously. I was curious if it was because he was a bad actor or because people typecasted him. I’ve seen 22% of them, seven films, and it’s been kind of cool. There are really awful party camp romps, others that are seriously dramatic but kind of mundane, and then just awful by the numbers productions with nothing remarkable to speak of. I want to make a super post this week about them all. Maybe I can explain what’s so interesting to me about him and these films. It would be fun to also rank them from a sober uninvolved perspective like mine, because Elvis fans really do have opinions about these.
Regret ever watching Clambake, it’s much more fun to talk about how Elvis made a movie titled Clambake than it is to actually watch it
Clambake is what started this and it was because someone told me “lol did you know Elvis made a movie called Clambake?” and said nothing else about it
If anyone wants a list of all the Elvis movies they can refer to on Letterboxd, that includes only his starring roles, I made one:
I love flaming star. I like the version of the song thats black star better though
this is the first Elvis movie recommendation I’ve received since doing this. thank you. I will watch flaming star.
I only know them pop culture as like people just hang out at the beach and sing songs. I’ve wanted to do something similar but found it hard to find Elvis movies.
God I am gonna buy some gas-station Bluray 6 packs of garbage in America.
so hey, Magnolia on prime, haven’t seen it since idk, 2008 or so? Time for a rewatch:
× didn’t remember how ridiculous Tom Cruise’s character is, Jesus Christ.
× Apropos Jesus: Didn’t notice this nice inside joke back then,
even though I’ve seen it twice by then. Checked that just now, and yeeeeaaaahhhh, nice one!
× how much of their budget did they waste on coreography/mise-en-scene, seriously ![]()
× also interesting, the use of the soundtrack - feels like that leitmotif is crescendo’ing over the whole movie.
jawan was swag… punished srk. ill post abt it more when my back hurts less but im glad i caught this in theaters (anirudh isnt my fav composer but he writes music for cinema sound systems imo!)
it was also quite brutal at points, atlee has an eye for vivid images imo that makes every entrance of srk into a scene a moment to cheer for which is also turned towards these shocking images of people abused by society
i would love to watch this, which i think was a bit of an inspiration to the setting of kung fu hustle…
i watched maaveeran ln and liked it quite a bit! i really liked how it was shot, blue flashlight beams in the dark waving across the frame… red and blue anamorphic bokeh…
hugely satisfying to watch sivakarthikeyan’s character progress from a coward who resists his superpower to a hero who doesnt need it… also really into when film directors act so i liked mysskin’s performance as well
i also really liked that there was this set of parallel comparison’s drawn, first between sivakarthikeyan’s role as a ghost writer and the apartment development, and later between the political advisor and vijay sethupathi’s voice
there’s a shot here at like 1:30 and i really admire that level of blocking, choreography and direction all coming together in a single shot like that… also think he’s completely hitting all his moves in this
The Long Goodbye — was taking way too long, and i didn’t manage to figure out why this gets so many
ratings on letterboxd … there have been many a hero who smokes a lot before and after Marlowe, and Altman has put out better flicks, so idk, would rather re-watch Quintet over this, but i am weird, so ymmv.
i watched EDMOND by stuart gordon which is kind of like watching william h macy doing a falling down, except it doesnt give you a fucking inch with which to think the main character might be cool or right. it feels impossible to recommend to a lot of people (really, some of the shit people say in this movie is HORRENDOUS BUT IM EDGY AND THE WAYS ITS PRESENTED IS REALLY FUCKED UP FUNNY, and they’re bad people too), fucking STOCKED with recognizable faces and over the top scenarios and stuart gordon blood
You gotta love hanging out with Elliot Gould! It owns. I love a snarky detective just hanging out while the story just happens around him.
Only watched it in the last few years but is is favorite.
