It is the ultimate dad movie, a movie dads are obsessed with

I remember arguing with my friend’s dad to not force his kid to go see it in the theatre when we could go see like Matrix 2, which ended with the dad exasperatingly saying something like “I WILL take my son to go see Master and Commander!!!”

it’s also weird that it’s the only adaptation of the Aubrey Maturin novels we ever got and that it’s very good but it’s just this isolated artifact

like a franchise that wasn’t

it is a comedy but, Captain Ron is about a suburban Chicago family fending off the “Pirates of the Caribbean”

The novels themselves are wonderful, so it really is just a phantom franchise. If only Vin Diesel was into Aubrey-Maturin, I would love a 10 movie franchise starring Vin as Jack Aubrey

surprised you recommended this before The Life Aquatic, which is also technically a pirate movie

this dad was right, Master and Commander is way better than the Matrix 2

I have read every single Aubrey Maturin book. I read many of them in middle school. In college my creative writing professor got the editor who published most of those books to come give a talk at the school… I jumped up in the question session and began asking shit and revealing that I’d read most of those books as a teen. The editor then basically ignored my question and said “damn girl you are reading some dad books. What is the matter with you” and my professor laughed. I was so angry!!

I then further disappointed her by becoming the only writer in my class to make a career out of it… in the wrong industry!! Videogames!!! I will forever be a disappointment to her… but fuck that, I got to read all those books about British guys getting turned into mincemeat and hugging each other. Only a loser laughs at that

I read all of those books because I thought the movie was so thrilling. It’s now one of the few physical movies I still own.

Other Master and Commander fact: you can (or at least, at one point you could) go take a tour of the scaled-down Surprise they used for filming in San Diego at that boat museum there.

One day I will make a boat videogame and place a copy on that editor’s grave

Finished watching this and yeah it’s pretty dope. the climax is thrilling. Mari Selvaraj again shows his great strength and building the tension of the moment before violence erupts ; and even as it erupts, the tension of the possibility of its escalation.

I don’t know if they completely stick the landing as the dialogue does get a bit didactic, they repeat the themes at you numerous times, I guess it’s a sacrifice they make for legibility in a mass audience but PARIYERUM PERUMAL did this thing with more subtlety. But then again the message is a bit different: the first movie focused on personal and communal hatreds to be combated with personal growth, whereas KARNAN is really about where these hatreds intersect with and are enforced by the material power of the state. Perhaps I’m reading too much into it but note how the only place you see the Indian flag is the police commissioner’s desk, as if to say, this is the power that the state wields, and back to the village and its displays of community (folk dance etc) - this is who that power is wielded against.

I don’t think I’ve seen a recent South Indian movie that goes full steam into magical realism, and this one doesn’t either; like the angels in Ee.Ma.Yau., the village deities in KARNAN seem to occupy a dimension that is parallel to ours, unable to directly affect our social struggles but cheering us on nevertheless. It gives a feeling that there is more to think about here above and beyond the simple synopsis of the plot : something that Mari Selvaraj excels at.

Not a movie but Black Sails whips

went on a big cory mcabee kick last night, forcing my friends to watch the american astronaut, as well as all six episodes of stingray sam. great movies if you like dirtbag space cowboys, or if you simply enjoy musical comedies.

My Cory McAbee story is like 20 years ago I saw a screening of The American Astronaut at an indie film festival put on by a little local college and McAbee was there in full on inside sunglasses Joaquin Pheonix on Letterman grump mode, and also he had no DVDs to sell
